The '59 Sound will forever be synonymous with the worst few weeks of my life; the mourning period following the death of a friend who had never lived to see his 21st birthday. The title track proved to be an immediate connection; the car crash, the story, even Brian Fallon's "did you hear your favorite song, one more time?". Never before have I come across a song that so adamantly described exactly how I was feeling, and I quickly discovered correlations with tracks such as "Here's Looking At You Kid" and "Backseat." The Gaslight Anthem's sophomore release seems to strike a chord for all of us; understanding our tribulations, but most importantly making us feel good about them.

Nostalgic LP's that whisk you off to another time & place are rare, but the absorbing storytelling on The Gaslight Anthem's superb 'The '59 Sound' does. Strangely relatable, each endearing song drips with sincerity & emotion, while this consistent album is cohesive in moving from fast-paced sing-alongs to gorgeous ballads. Combining blues, punk & Americana rock, every track contains hooky guitar melodies, with some cuts growing their own character over time via subtle tempo switches. It's upbeat 3 singles begin the LP perfectly, with the anthemic 'Great Expectations' being a song of 2008 contender. Recommended Tracks: Great Expectations, Old White Lincoln, The '59 Sound, The Patient Ferris Wheel & Here's Looking At You Kid.

Catchy and never letting down, The 59' Sound sums up what good rock should sound
like. The Gaslight Anthem have successfully created an album that has inspired a generation
with their brand of hook laden rock, while also borrowing from the greats of yester-year,
The 59' Sound will always keep you coming back for more.

If overall catchiness is the sign of a great album, A) Blink-182 would be widely known as the best band of all time B) "The '59 Sound" would earn a 5. Here's the problem: yeah, it's catchy as hell- but goddamn it if the Gaslight Anthem can only write one song. Although this album is a favorite in my cars' CD rotation, I can only listen to the first 4 songs and #11 before I get 'punk rock overload'. "But Bob, it's PUNK ROCK, it's SUPPOSED to be like that. Um.. no excuse. One beat through 90% of the material is enough for me to call fowl. Bottom line: catchy, yes; but musically inept. For you punk-rock lovers- you will love this album.

Nick Hornby wrote about the predictability of The Gaslight Anthem for the insert of their 2012 release 'Handwritten'. Although it seemed like a slight cop out to say "No, predictability is a great thing to have in music", Hornby describes what the Gaslight Anthem does perfectly. They don't need to come up with something new for every single album to be heard and liked. There's no need to come up with some stupid, avant garde gimmick for every album release, if you did, creativity, although endless, would run out quickly. Although what Hornby wrote for 'Handwritten' fits very well with that exact album, I feel it holds true to Gaslight's entire discography, especially 'The 59 Sound'. The album was released in a time where the guitar and vocals of old Bruce Springsteen rock was old and dead. There seemed no hope for a return in something as good as that. However, from deep in a sea of House and Party Hip-Hop, The Gaslight Anthem emerged, doing the exactly what they knew how to do: play good music.

Well I absolutely love this album. I really haven't been listening to anything but for weeks now. It's very odd that I would give this a 5 as it isn't in the vein of what I usually adore, but if this isn't the catchiest thing I've ever heard in my life... I really like this, and even if it makes its way out of my 5 club eventually, I will always adore it.

When I listen to Gaslight Anthem, the most wonderful thing happens, I get dated back to the creation of Punk, When bands sang with a purpose, made unbelievably great music, had fantastic lyrics and melodies. I highly recomend this CD to anyone, I find if you have any respect for superior writings, Gaslight Anthem is for you.

A fantastic album. The Springsteen comparisons are so obvious, but they fit so perfectly. It has a way of drawing the listener in with stripped-down music. I'm so glad this album was not overproduced.

Springsteen's followers from New Jersey make an album that ranges almost up to the Boss' best in this sing-a-long and incredibly likeable and infectous punk/rock-record with unmatchable hits as Film Noir, anthems like The Patient Ferris Wheel, the soft ballad Here's Looking at You Kid, and hard-hitting rocker at the end of the album, The Backseat.

An absolute joy to listen to and one of the best albums of the decade. Fallon's stories are at the heart of the music and it's te ability to relate so closely to them that makes this album one of my favourites. The title track recalls lost grandparents, and who hasn't been able to relate to 'Heres Looking at You, Kid' ? Anyone whose ever loved and lost can. Then there's the amazing 'Great Expectations' and 'High Lonesome'. Truly every song is amazing
