Sophomore slump hits hard. Boring as hell, basic 12 bar blues, rock n roll & 60s rock
tropes coming around here, while the annoying version of Jimmy Barnes finally appears,
with his grit & annoyingly shrill vocal tonality. Gone are the grooves, the more complex
instrumentation & arrangements, and the more widespread textural qualities. Only Showtime
harkens back to this quality, easily the best song here. Ironic lyric of showtime
"Showtime
Try to catch the spark
That got me hooked so many years ago and died.
Second-rate musicians
Feeding infantile illusions
Reading music magazines to keep the habit satisfied
Pitching, To some demographic average"
Sounds like the process of making most of this record. Playing music that's been dumbed
down,
and rolled back by 10 years, to appeal to the drunken, brain-dead 1979 pub crowd.
Also the version available on streaming, the 2011 remaster, sounds brickwalled as hell,
very congested / clumped up instrumentally, it's a poor quality production job. No clue
what the original sounded like.
