As hypnotizing as a crawling drive in a dimly lit tunnel, Liz Harris' Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill is a foray into acoustic songwriting, shrouded in a hazy room with pale walls. Though at its core, the album is an emotional ride (leaning towards the sad, desolate side of things) and a fairly uniform piece, there are many little vibes and visions one gets from the album's ethereality; one that popped into my head as soon as the windy opening track "Disengaged" was on its final, sorrowful notes was of a person staring up into a ceiling fan in slow motion, tired after a meaningless hard day's work, watching the blades revolve as if to find salvation in their rotation. Though this introspective vision tells of longing of something greater, the fact is the album is much more than another indie plunge into the murkiness of pain - it's a last minute escape from the failure of dreams. Harris, through tides of fatiguing sound, succeeds in creating music that acts like an ebb and flow of sadness and slight opportunistic hope. The fact that she can make these polar opposites bleed into each other is a feat in itself, but to do it in such a dreary, dreamy light such as this creates a one of a kind listening experience.

This sounds like reading a book wrapped up in a warm blanket at home on a cold winter night.
Superb acoustic guitar-based ambient with indie-like vocals. It is a bit on the long side and
does not vary much, but because it has such a unique feel and texture, balancing between haunting
and reassuring, in the right conditions it just works. Amazing album.
Edit: Absolute wonder. Much folkier than anything she released previously, with lots of acoustic
guitar and fewer noisy/drone elements. This is a droney folk album at this point, not a folky
drone album, and its a favourite folk record for me. Hadn't properly rated it at the time, but
this is clearly a 4.45

An absolute phantom of an album. Essentially it is a girl on the guitar but it is the furthest thing from Secondhand Serenade. Dragging A Dead Horse Up A Hill is a very, very subtle, murky and moody record creating a very foggy tenderness while keeping the tention as thick as possible. Boredom is biggest negative of this release, never really breaking out of the hazy soundscape that this album presents. Instead the slightest raise of her voice or even the smallest movement of tempo is garnered as special making this album almost impossible to review. How someone managed to make a review of this piece of blissfulness is mindbottling because it is so musically intangeble while being so personal. You will tear yourself apart trying to grasp Grouper's Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill.
