Celtic Frost is one of those bands that I think has never been properly categorized, if it's even possible to categorize them. Sure, their first record Morbid Tales is basically black metal or blackened thrash, but just about everything past it is nearly impossible to categorize beyond Progressive Metal. For that reason, To Mega Therion is quite possibly Celtic Frost's most well rounded record, due to the amazing musicianship, lack of boundaries, and the fact that it never slows down or gets boring. This is the point where they started incorporating choirs, orchestras, and all sorts of things, which to me makes this one of the best prog metal records. Sure, it doesn't quite have what most recognize in the genre (tons of soloing, soaring vocals, etc.), but it shows a band taking risks with their music that no one had quite thought of bringing into extreme metal. This still sounds like it could've been made today, it's still exciting to listen to. So overall, a masterpiece of progressive metal, and the bridge between the ambitious, gothic Into the Pandemonium and the darkness of Morbid Tales. An absolutely essential listen for anyone interested in metal.
