Band of Horses? upon listening: outside of Slapstick and title track, I didn't hear any Band of Horses. Kinda wish it was though because outside of those two and Won't Drown, this was nearly unlistenable. In fact, Crown Candy is the worst thing I've heard this year, and probably one of the worst songs this decade, along with Gameshark which is unbearable vocals over electronics from Nicki Minaj's "Stupid Hoe." It won't let me give it less than a 2 right now but this is definitely like a 1.3 or so. Absolutely terrible. The disappointment of the year.

one time i was seeing someone and i sent them this album with the context of "this is one of my favorite albums of all time, check it out and let me know what you think" and all they had to say after three (3) listens was that it reminded them of the U2 album apple forced on everyone in like 2014 i will literally never recover from this

An interesting exercise in pop music, but doesn't offer anything new except perhaps the textures. If you thought that so-called "emo" revival was whiny and annoying, you will find even more to hate with an album like this, which takes the annoyance to a new level using the kind of pop-electronica cliches that I expect to hear when I turn on the radio to a local station. Luckily the album is not quite as bland and tasteless as the radio stuff, so I'm being generous and giving this a 2.0.

I can't remember the last time I felt this emotionally tied to an album. Between the anticipation (Dealer is my favorite album) and the actual payoff (I fucking love this album), I honestly don't know what a '5' looks like if I can't '5' this.

Wow... this album is art. Period. Many of the song ideas here show moments of melody, dissonance, and the usage of
unconventional instrumentation for some songs. Examples of those are the "classical esque string playing" in the song
heartbeats which has a more EDM based beat as well as the bagpipes in Bastardizer which I never heard in an indie
rock/alt rock song before. IDK there probably are bagpipes in those genres but I just don't know anyone who used them.
The guitar solo in Lich prince is something I never heard from their guitar playing before. It was a shredfest which took me
by surprise but in a good way. Point being, this album explores so much sonically that you got to admire the band. One
fault with the album is that there's a dragging moment with the song "five cups" and I'm not sure that I'll replay most of the
songs due to the artistic value sometimes not allowing me to listen to the song multiple times. I will probably replay at least
4-5 of these songs.

It's bogged down by some pointless songs, but man when this hits it's pretty much the quintessential sound of 2018. "Lich Prince" is the best song of the year.

Take the emo sensibilities of Brand New, throw in the vocal eccentricities of Modest Mouse, and douse it all in the sublime atmosphere of The Antlers and you'll have a product called Nearer, My God. In other words, a forceful AOTY contender.

A hard to pinpoint mixture of sounds and influences - with elements of punk, rock, noise and sometimes reminiscent of early 2000 era Radiohead to some degree on songs like Gameshark or giving straight out 80s rock Vibes With the chorus guitar effect on Bastardizer. Not to mention theres even traces of RnB and electronica on this thing. I have no problem calling this a modern masterpiece within the emo genre because it is. It is a band willing to let a song go in unexpected directions and take risks and the pay off is huge. Hope they will continue in this vein on their upcoming Projects.

truly one of the most well thought out, intricate, beautiful, and emotional albums i've heard in genuine years. Out of the fifty or so minutes this album does not give a second to breathe, offering precise and interesting song writing on every song from beginning to end. When first hearing this album it was truly something valuable to me, giving off some more electronic and dance influences. This is easily the best foxing will ever be and i'm glad i got to hear and see it. From every single note tapped or snare hit something new and important for the subgenre of "emo" is offered.

Dealer and The Albatross had outstanding tracks, but never felt like thoroughly engaging records to me. This was quite a step into uncharted territory for them. Grand Paradise and Heartbeats are beautiful. rOn a side note, can anyone tell me where to find the string sample from "Heartbeats"? I'd love to hear that in full!

Where did this album come from??? I have always been a casual fan of the band. I have seen them live twice r(both times as an opener) and the second time in particular they really caught my attention with their live energy, rbut both times presented an amazing passion that felt a bit missing from their second album. But this.. this rsurpassed all expectations I had. Foxing manages to perfectly walk the line of becoming more accessible by rdropping the in your face whiney Emo roots, while simultaneously growing even more atmospheric, intricate and rcatchy. Could potentially grow into my AOTY.
