4.0 excellent | JS19 | August 31st 18 | I for one advocate Joe's R A D I C A L views like: 'I'm sad my baby died during childbirth', 'Toxic Masculinity is a thing', 'Homophobes are shit', 'Brexit was a mess but let's all make the best of it', and 'Immgrants can be okay'.rI mean I know he's seriously RADICAL guys but I'm giving him a pass because the music is good

2.5 average | noahconstrictor | August 31st 18 | I don't understand the hype at all. There's zero variance between any of the guitar riffs, the vocals are mediocre, and half the songs sound the same. Skip this.

3.0 good | butcherboy | September 1st 18 | probably a 3.. fun, sharp, witty (in the most banal sense possible) but a lot of these songs won't hold up over a year's listen for me.. some of the choruses fall into the same trap as Rachel khoo, great biting verses and then a wishy washy radio chorus that fucks it all up..

4.5 superb | Gene Gol-Jonsson CONTRIBUTOR | February 17th 21 | What Idles achieve here is bringing the raw, but fun-loving side of punk music to the modern age with all the rigour of its political bluntness.
Bump |
4.3 superb | Erwann S. STAFF | January 10th 20 | Leftists can be pompous gents that others find up their own arses (called gauchiasses in French, a contraction of gauchiste (=leftist) and chiasse (=liquid shit)). They can also be riotous chaps that others find unsophisticated. IDLES are of the second type. These subgroups' social wants are basically alike, but their respective way of achieving their common goal is totally different. Left can't meme, and they also haven't learned how to unify yet. Quitting the sociological bs (yet the record itself is not totally devoid of it), this sounds like what punk should be in 2018: the Pistols' angriness, The Fall-like's post-punk as well as some noisy and post-hardcore riffs, the whole lot being a maelstrom of energy encapsulating most of what happened during the last 40 years of enraged Brit music. The first half consists of the most in-your-douche-face tracks in recent memory, and unfortunately shows how lazy the last third of the LP is. The lyrics are funny, but you can't always tell if the band is tongue-in-cheek or dead serious. It's thus not a perfect record, but what could you expect from angry rosbifs who are at times too easy on themselves? At least we got a fun, energetic and adventurous record that pours its heart out. Join this heart with the pompous leftist's big ideas, and maybe there will be once more a strong left political force. It doesn't exist yet, maybe it will never exist, but those who will listen to this band won't forget the heart they show. And we all know the heart is a muscle, the strongest of 'em all.

4.5 superb | KyleLee | February 26th 19 | This was a refreshing reminder about what punk music is about: raw expression. This album perfectly summed up the frustrations of many young adults in not just the band's native land of the UK, but here in the states as well.

4.0 excellent | cjbizzlebizzle | December 21st 18 | Blunt, angry and in-your-face as any good punk record should be, Joy as an Act of Resistance has it all. Frontman Joe Talbot deserves massive credit for his magnificent performance as does the band backing him. Talbot is energetic and refuses to hold anything back with lyrics that are political, humorous, brutally personal and generally witty with plenty of references and call-outs to explore in each song. Beyond the lyrics Talbot is always a joy whether he is singing, shouting, rambling or yelling, his personality shines through in every song. Musically, 'Joy...' is a gem for those who love high energy punk. The band is able to cover so much ground in the twelve tracks. "I'm Scum", "Danny Nedelko" and "Great" are legit punk anthems while "June", "Never Fight a Man with A Perm" and "Samaritans" delve a bit further with their subject matter and music approach. They have both the catchy riffs and the arsty dissonance and it comes off effortlessly. It is hard to think of a band in the punk realm recently that is able to be as fun and approachable as Andrew W K and as serious and personal as it gets all in the span of 20 minutes. Good front to back but Colossus, Danny Nedelko and Samaritans are god-tier.

4.5 superb | Sam C. | November 16th 18 | Some of the most feel good punk i've heard in a very long time. This is one of my favorite albums of the year just because of the sheer soul, sincerity, vulnerability, and the pure spread of emotions throughout the records. Ever note has importance and sincerity, it isn't just angry 'i hate my job and town' punk, it's album that exemplifies love and how far that can truly come at time. Joe's vocals have such a strong weight but in more of a positive, and uplifting light. This band is special and i truly hope they stick around for a long while.

4.0 excellent | TheManMachine | October 31st 18 | Talbot's strength lies in snotty singalongee snarler rather than wise wordsmith; hence when spouting social-political usually the sentiment is greater than the articulation: calls for unity and loving yourself yet kicking "douches" in the mouth and classifying someone as "one big neck with sausage hands" for example. And hey I hate homophobes too, but professing to puttin' em in coffins akin to a wrestler is basically pure bro-talk. But beefy punk din and dirty bass lines and gangbuster choruses galore are their true bread-n-butter. And after seeing Idles in the flesh and watching a dozen-or-so vintage hardcore tuffs ardently shout along with "A beautiful immigrant" and "I kissed a boy and I liked it", I supposed sentiment is sometimes enough. A penchant for spelling is nice too.

4.5 superb | YungSadgod | October 16th 18 | One of the best punk albums I have ever heard. Agressive, biting, witty, passionate, catharctic,
entertaining, straightforward but still very deep, all that punk should be and should've been from
the get-go. Fucking love the non-punk influences the album toys with, most notably on Colossus and
June, those tracks along with the outro to Rottweiler provide the most atmospheric, haunting and
demented moments on the album, June being absolutely emotionally crushing, whereas tracks like
Danny Nedelko and Great provide us with supremely catchy and frankly uplifting bangers. Absolutely
love the lyrics through and through, Television and Samaritans are absolute highlights lyrically
and their messages resonate with me a lot. Fantastic album that's probably gonna end up very high
on my year-end list.

4.5 superb | Jake | October 2nd 18 | This album is as fun as it is explosive. Joy is indeed an act of resistance throughout this impressive followup to their 2017 debut, Brutalism. Talbot uses his on brand tongue in cheek lyricism to tackle some of the most pressing issues in contemporary society in a hilarious yet moving manner. You're gonna love your fellow members of society or Talbot is going to make you (Re: "I put homophobes in coffins"). The instrumentation is pretty damn good on top of this, with tracks such as the opening 'Colossus' showing off the impressive technical abilities the band has to offer. One of my favorites of this year. 88/100

3.5 great | commonist | September 14th 18 | 72/100. With fast riffs and cheeky lyrics, Joy as an Act of Resistance provides a worthy follow up to last year's Brutalism, proving the staying power of U.K. based rock outfit IDLES. Although I enjoyed the harder, punkier aesthetic of Brutalism, there's still much to be enjoyed on this record. The lyrics are wittier than ever, and many of the songs boast impressive length and structure. I have a feeling this one will grow on me over the coming months.
