Though I'm in love with the newest incarnation of Swans, listening to this album will probably remain the most intense musical experience for me. Regardless of my surroundings listening to it takes all of my attention, I find it difficult to read on even the minimal ambient tracks. From the lofi voice samples to the post-rock opuses and folk the entire thing works to create the most disturbing and strange world in music, and the sequencing is so well done, it would be a shame to skip a track of this 2.5 hour album.

This album is almost unlistenable due to how utterly terrifying it is. Just try listening to I Was a Prisoner in Your Skull or Minus Something late at night with headphones on - it is near impossible. No album has ever done that to me before and for that reason alone makes Soundtracks for the Blind a classic. But there are also amazing drone, ambient, techno, indie, and post-rock compositions on here too, all of which contribute to the album's brilliance.

Swans were known back in the Eighties throughout the underground for making some of the most terrifying music known to man. Soundtracks For The Blind, the double disk opus that is also Swans's last album, is a very terrifying album. Only while those Eighties, no-wave behemoths Swans released terrified you through sheer noise, Soundtracks For The Blind performs its torture in a different style: pure tension. Nearly two-and-a-half hours of ominous instrumentals, post-rock-influenced build-ups, and Michael Gira's depressing vocals make Soundtracks For The Blind anything but an easy listen, but like many difficult endeavors, it is a rewarding one. A monolithic achievement, you can pretty much skip every post rock album and just listen to
this because it's the real thing. Although it's not just a post rock album, it encompasses
many genres while at the same time transcending them.

A lengthy and ambitious summary of Swans' extensive discography. Soundtracks compresses the influential group's dark, expansive, and above all strange musical style into a patchwork-style compilation clocking in at over two hours. To explain this album or call it cohesive would be impossible, but the tracks are held together by an overarching and perpetual darkness that is found in various way across each song, building and building until it indoctrinates you and leaves your mind warped.

This album was really awesome. I wasn't sure at first, but after a little bit into the second song it started getting a lot better, and I thoroughly enjoyed the rest of it. Innovative, all over the place and experimental; everything you could ask for in an album. It's a bit overlong, but if you don't mind the length it's very worth it.
