42/100. A good message with underwhelming delivery. On this latest LP, J. Cole focuses his attention on drugs and addiction. And while there certainly were some hard hitting moments and somber reflections, much of the content here is half-baked, pseudo-deep conscious rap. In a subgenre where message and delivery are so important, J. Cole falls flat, unfortunately reaffirming his meme status as fake/tumblr deep. Decent production though.

There are maybe two or three decent verses here, but the rest of the album is bogged down by some questionable choices. The drug theme is totally ham-fisted, and the down-pitched voiceovers throughout each song come across as really corny. Cole trying to rap more aggressively over these more trap style beats just doesn't sound right either. Not to mention the multiple parts where I'm getting Kendrick Lamar DAMN flashbacks. Underwhelming just like every other Cole project.

Messages are there, song quality is not. There are a few neutral spots but otherwise, worst cole album to date

Just because it's a good J.COLE album, makeith a good album it does not. If I wanted to listen to a shittier, more pretentious version of DAMN, I'd listen to the DAMN collector's edition. 2/10.

expose his aggressive smooth rap's flow with drug and painful introspective / twisted weight's voices to create such a moody narrative emotional atmosphere along with minimal beats and instrumentals / simple but solid dynamic

Recently, J. Cole has received a lot of criticism from the industry and from his fans, since few of his works have claimed the hype of anyone looking for quality Hip-Hop. I never understood that, since i didn't heard anything from him. But today i listened to "K.O.D." and now i really understand why he is so criticized. It's a shame because you can see that he has ability and could be more than he is, but instead of thinking like that, he keeps trying to be Kendrick Lamar.

This is okay. It's not as good as 2014FHD, which I unabashedly love, but it's a big step up from 4YEO. It absolutely doesn't deserve a sub-2.5 average, though.
