3.3 great | Trey STAFF | March 27th 18 | Maybe it's because Akercocke are back together, and so they don't need this band to output their twisted progressive death metal anymore, but "Frightened" sounds nothing like its two predecessors. "Frightened" is a much more subdued, progressive, and experimental release that only occasionally delves into any kind of conventionally harsh territory. The best way to describe this is to say it's a blend of "Tonight's Music"-era Katatonia, "La Masquerade Infernale"-era Arcturus, and "Thunder and Consolation"-era New Model Army with occasional nods to "Nothingface"-era Voivod. "Frightened" is an album that takes a few listens to even start getting into, and even then, the twisted nature of the vocals and and music will take a few more listens to really sink in. I can see this as one of those albums that grows on you all year long.

3.5 great | thurs | February 5th 19 | Some great songs on this one -- there are some misses, but when they nail the goth rock / metal crossover it sounds excellent.

4.0 excellent | TheNemeton91 | May 10th 18 | Extreme Metal drumming icon David Gray could now reasonably tour on Chelsea Wolfe's Hiss
Spun. No, no, I'm serious.
What a time to be alive.
