| 2.0 poor | RobertChristgau | March 27th 12 | Despite what you may think, this is the absolute worst record of all time. No songs about rock n roll, sex or drugs, and my biggest complaint is the display of talent, flawless combination, juxtaposition and integration of jazz and classical into sporadic 'rock' music. Integrate? Taking ideas from another genre, placing them perfectly into a diverse set of rock songs and making an album that rides on it's composition, elegance and quirkiness rather than on pop hooks and lyrics about doing drugs? Lol, hard. Pretentious drivel. Ersatz ***. Why would somebody torture themselves with supposed 'rock' music that doesn't even rock hard? Oh, please. Talent? Why display that in music? Why show off Fripp, why? Sure your compositions on this album were dense, artistically genius, varied, new, and light years ahead of their time but so what? Where are the ***ing pop hooks and short songs? And what about the manipulation of the main melody in the closer track "Court of the Cocksucking King"? You think you're smart for placing a slower ambient section of a reworked version of the same ***ing melody you used for the entire song as a bridge to a huge, loud, and epic conclusion. Haha. Nonsense. Is it rock n roll? Nope. It's talent. Who the *** wants that? Ersatz *** to the highest degree.

| 5.0 classic | John Legendary User Hanson STAFF | June 25th 06 | This album holds its place as overall the best album of all time in my book. Listening to it, it really doesnt feel as though it is. Sure, four of the tracks are breathtaking (21st Century and the title track being the choice cuts), but Moonchild has 8 minutes of boring noise. All this matters not; this was the pioneering record of '69, and easily one of the most influential (directly and indirectly) in history.

| 5.0 classic | wikuk | November 16th 06 | Every genre has to start somewhere. Progressive rock started with King Crimson's debut, In the Court of the Crimson King. Although there are only 5 songs on it, the album is rather long. All 5 songs are outstanding which all produce their own sound. The album opener is a angry jazzy grudge-song, while the song I Talk To The Wind is a sweet ballad-like masterpiece. Next comes Epitaph with the endless layers creating a thick dark song. Moonchild starts out as one of the most sad melodies before developing into a jam song. The last song is the title track, and stands on is own with the medieval traits. A classic right here.

| 5.0 classic | NeutralThunder12 | April 7th 10 | Robert Fripp is quite the musical mind. Creative force and led guitarist behind legendary progressive rock band King Crimson, Fripp is sometimes penned as a little indulgent and mechanical, and while he might not be the most animated guitar player, hes a varied composer with an incredible sense of humor. While his work with KC was always inconsistent, acclaimed debut "In the Court of the Crimson King" is a flawless piece of art made light years ahead of its time, and a truly perfect album. While I struggle to connect with it lyrically (though most prog bands write pretty awful lyrics, KC usually being no exception despite consistently writing funny ones), musically, vocally and atmospherically, this record is simply perfect. From the infectious opener, the heavy "21st Century Schizoid Man" (which is so out there for it's time, it literally sounded 40 years ahead of everything else), to the beautiful ballad "I Talk to the Wind", to the epic closer "The Court of the Crimson King", King Crimson's debut flaunts a masterful combination of rock, jazz and classical music to form one coherent, lovely piece of music. While some might criticize the second portion of "Moonchild" for being noodly and pointless, it was one of the first songs to bring atmospheric avant garde jazz to the rock world, and I personally have a lot of fun with that section, and applaud it for being so out there. "In the Court of the Crimson King" is flawless.

| 5.0 classic | Sputnik`s Resident Deity and Peacekeeper | September 4th 08 | This album is in a class of it's own. The first album of the band King Crimson, it is generally agreed that this was also the first album to be called "Progressive Rock," which remains one of the most enduring music genres today. Robert Fripp would go on to create many more albums under the King Crimson moniker, and other members would go on to other similar projects (such as Emerson, Lake and Palmer), but nothing would ever achieve the amount of influence this album has.
The album itself is a monumental piece of awesome! It must be heard to be believed, must be experienced to be understood. Fripp and company use a large array of instruments to give each song a feeling and a mood--"21st Century Schizoid Man" is a psychotic cacophony of a track, unrestrained by such trivial things as time signatures and lyrical coherency, while the following track "I Talk To The Wind" is a soft, floaty tune that wisps along smoothly. The instrumentation is very dynamic, as well: a flute in "I Talk To The Wind" is almost unrecognizable to the one used in the title track. Triangles and cymbals play a larger role in these 5 songs than on almost any other album I've ever heard. Greg Lake's diverse vocal range might here him screaming out at the top of his lungs in one song, nearly whispering in the next, then hitting a dramatic and beautiful high note in the next. The most amazing thing is that this all WORKS, and together help create this masterpiece of music.
Such blatant disregard for convention could have turned out to be disastrous (and perhaps killed off Progressive Rock before it even started), yet instead it turn this album into one for the ages. Nothing is quite like "In The Court of the Crimson King," and it deserves nothing less than full marks.

| 5.0 classic | Mike C | March 12th 13 | An obvious classic. In the Court of the Crimson King will forever stand the test of time as one of the quintessential albums in prog lore, a defining slab of cohesive art made only more important by it's arguably incomparable influece.

| 3.5 great | jordanwagel | December 22nd 12 | More leaning towards a 4, but this was one of the most underwhelming albums ever. The hype is very unmerited. Just because it was the beginning of something, doesn't make it the best of something. But mad respect for starting what you started King Crimson, I just don't personally think your material is very exceptional.

| 4.5 superb | bullymong | December 17th 12 | One of the finest prog albums of all time, in the court of the crimson king stands out as the best king crimson release ever. the drumming is incredible, the vocals rule and the otehr instruments are just as good. the title track and 21st century schizoid man are the best things on here but the whole album is great.

| 5.0 classic | Aaron Jablonski | December 6th 12 | At the dawning of our souls, we'll saw the light. That was many years ago. It held so much meaning we attempted to search deeper into it. King Crimson was of many explorers searching beyond the light into the darkest of all nights. They went beyond prophetic, beyond real, and beyond the mainstream music bloodlines. It was the temple that helped progressive rock move forward throughout the world. Don't overthink the main definition of prog rock. It lies in this masterpiece of masterpieces.
And a sidenote: what does Robert Christgau truly know about this?

It's an addicting album despite it's length and occational dragness. Ferocious and innovative, even to this day and age, could be very well be the name of the name of the album, since rarely has Progressive and Jazz Fusion sound THIS bad ass.rCouple that with the fact that this one of the, if not THE, most pieces for the progressive movement, and this is a classic, whether i like it or not.

| 5.0 classic | Dashy | June 2nd 12 | In The Court Of The Crimson King is still one of my favorite progressive releases ever. From the more upbeat 21st Century Schizoid Man to the beauty in Epitaph, King Crimson delivers one of the most, if not the greatest debut album I have ever heard.

| 0.0 | Wreath | April 2nd 12 | There's a real kind of enchanting atmosphere throughout the entire album and I can't seem to find the words to fully describe it - it's just magic. Could have done without the ambient section in Moonchild though. Stating the obvious; great songwriting and musicianship, exquisite use of every instrument and progressive as ever. Though age has taken its toll this remains a great treasure in the music world.

| 3.0 good | Tim Bartolini | January 20th 12 | It only takes two songs to make an album worth the listen, especially when there are only five songs on the album and both the songs are over six minutes long. | 5.0 classic | Zilla2112 | November 25th 11 | A progressive rock masterpiece, 'In the Court of the Crimson King' is an album that will be remembered for ages to come. Its influence can be seen in most progressive rock albums that followed it, and few, if any, have reached the highs of this album. Even though the improvisational section at the end of "Moonchild" may not be of much interest, the perfection of songs like "Epitaph" and the album's epic closer, "The Court of the Crimson King" more than make up for this tiny flaw. Check out: The whole thing.

| 5.0 classic | GnFnRs87 | October 20th 11 | An album that is among the finest pieces of art that has ever been created. All the tracks are amazing but my personal favourite has to be the brilliant title track, but really I could pick any song from this album as my favourite. One of the first prog rock albums that along with Rush's 'Moving Pictures' and Pink Floyd's 'Wish You Were Here' is one of the best ever recorded., and something King Crimson would never match again.

| 1.5 very poor | lvl99zubat | June 24th 11 | King Crimson. One of the most critically acclaimed bands of all time. Now, you may be thinking, "A 1.5? This is ridiculous!" However, before you attack me for giving this album a below par score, hear me out on this; King Crimson sucks. The singing, the guitars, the drums, everything is just so bad and bland. The band itself has been called one of the most innovating of its time. In 2011, should music like this really be acceptable?
The first track on the album is called "21st Century Schizoid Man". The name itself is very stupid, since this album was made in the twentieth century. Does the band think the target audience is really that stupid? I can't believe the arrogance of the band. Anyways, the song itsels starts off with train whistling, which is very odd. What, did they just decide to add some train whistling to the song just because they felt like it? It adds noting to the song! All it did was extend the time! Now, the actual music isn't bad, but when you hear the vocals you'll almost want to turn the album off. It's as if they couldn't afford a decent microphone and sang into one of those baby phones that parents use to know what their babies are doing. Then you get to the middle part and it's just them ***ing around with their guitars! Like really who are they fooling with this? And then finally the song ends and they start, quite literally, destroying their instruments as if to harm the listener. Bull***, I say.
The next track is I Talk To The Wind. It's the worst song ever made, there are no riffs or anything! So boring.
After that aborted fetus is Epitaph. Still no riffs! And the guitar work is sub par!! I could probably play a better song! And the lyrics make no sense. It's look they were shooting cocaine into their asshole and came up with these lyrics while they were screaming in ecstasy. Seriously, I'm beginning to think that King Crimson were actually a bunch of kids experimenting with their parents instruments. Also, no riffs!
After that is Moonchild, which is SOOOO BAAD! It's like listening to nursery rhymes for the mentally retarded! This song was designed to make your go to sleep. In fact, I fell asleep to this song and woke up the next morning, finding my underwear covered to pee and my bed soaked. The costs of listening to this ***-fest . . .
FINALLY the last track, and it's just as bad as the last four. It's basically Epitaph, but worse.

It really captures the mind of the listener, almost like a drug-induced nightmare (especially on "Moonchild"). Every song is powerful, memorable and emotional, especially the emotional "I talk to the Wind" and "Epitaph". It's not all gloomy though, there's some more groovy upbeat tracks such as "21st Century Schizoid Man" and the title track. All in all a great album for chilling to with mates after a long drinking night!

| 5.0 classic | Matthijs van der Lee | December 1st 09 | The seminal, groundbreaking progressive rock album that King Crimson have never managed to equal. The sheer madness of 21st Century Schizoid Man, the soothing dream that is I Talk to the Wind, the haunting, towering centrepiece Epitaph and the majestic, lyrically and vocally brilliant title track are four masterpieces. Moonchild is the infamous knack in the album, interesting but too long and unfocused. Nevertheless, In the Court of the Crimson King is the single most important progressive album ever made, and still one of the genre's finest accomplishments.

| 3.5 great | Conrad Eggers | August 24th 09 | King Crimson's first album is a pretentious piece of self-important art rock that has been hyped to an unbelievable extent. The first song owns, but the rest must grow on you. Epitaph and The Court of the Crimson King did. However, I Talk to the Wind and Moonchild are beyond me. They are just dull, and lacking the sweeping grandure and power of the other tracks. The former is just slow and featureless but the real blunder is Moonchild. Ten minutes of sparse noodling and occasional tinkling noises is never a good idea. Fripp has the ability to write well constructed, driving epics but still insists this meandering be included. So that renders about eighteen minutes of this record quite skippable. 3/5

| 5.0 classic | Christopher Kenrick | December 8th 08 | An incredible album which had a strong performance from all the members. Not a single bad track on the album, but I felt the last half of Moonchild was so-so, as the song seems to fall apart and just ends up being a few noises. It's worth listenening to if you're an ELP fan, as Greg's voice really, really brings this album together.

| 5.0 classic | Kyle Hallman | June 10th 08 | There are few albums I can name where I could rightfully call each song in and of its own a masterpiece, but more than that when each of those masterpieces can not only stand on their own but form together to create something genius, something truely transcendant. It would be a very difficult task to pick this album apart, it is heavily layered and deeply brilliant. Not only is it one of the first notable instances of what is dubbed "Progressive Rock" it is also very easily one of the finest. A pure work of genius from start to finish.

| 0.0 | sethpierce | April 18th 07 | C'mon. You have to respect this album. Every progger wanker like me loves this album. Grunge fans have Nirvana's Nevermind, and if they don't like that, they have Pearl Jam's Ten and a few others. Metal heads have Led Zeppelin II, Led Zeppelin IV, and Black Sabbath's self-titled debut release. Glam rock fans have Van Halen's self-titled, which isn't really glam, but inspired most glam rock bands. What do us proggers have? We have In The Court Of The Crimson King. Every genre starts somewhere.

| 3.5 great | The Door Mouse | March 25th 07 | In the Court of the Crimson King is considered a progressive jem to many. But I didn't find it as great as it is cracked up to be. Yes it is great but I didn't see what all the fuss was about. It does start out good with 21st Century Schiziod Man and end great with the title track but Moonchild is nothing special and I Talk to the Wind get extremely boring. If a song like Epitaph wasn't between them this album wouldn't be as great as it is. So in conclusion, this is a great album but not an absoloute delecacy.
Bump |
| 4.5 superb | Joe Costa | March 17th 07 | While I obviously don't orgasm over this album as most people do, In the Court of the Crimson King is a fantastic album, and one of the few progressive albums that I can thoroughly enjoy. "21st Century Schizoid Man" is hands down one of the greatest songs ever created, blowing through seven minutes of wailing guitar and horn lines, and some of the most dynamic drumming out there, and "The Court of the Crimson King" is also a powerful closer to the album. However, it comes right after "Moonchild", which kills the momentum set by the other tracks. Regardless, ItCotCK is one of the pioneer records of a genre that would see many imitators, but few that would reach the high bar set from this album.
