I agree it's not perfect, but it's still a great album. I really like the title track and a few others have alot of potential. Definitely worth a listen.

Okay, now this is my first review and its probably not going to be a great start on this site, as im probably going to get labeled as the annoying little scene kid who goes on to youtube and spams anyone who dosnt like the band with "OMG u n00b this band is br00tl BEST.BAND.EVER!!!!!!). Well im not so please bare in mind this is just my opinion and try not to be too harsh.
anyways, first things first, i enjoyed this album and feel the hype surronding this band is very well deserved. The vocals are spot on, and although they are a pretty over-produced, at times it work as an advantge. Guitar work is precise and very heavy. And the drumming is crushing and destructive. These are all key merits that build an impresive 2nd album. Also lyrics are disturbing (in a good way) and depict a dark and hate filled story.
Overall this album shows this bands talent, and what a talent it is. On almost every song, a sheer devotion and understanding of deathcore shines through and allows for an original and impressive package. The most standout tracks on the album have to be some of the best extreme metal tracks ive heard all year. These include "possesion", a synth filled melodic burst of rage that brings the entire whitechapel sound into one impressive track. "Somatically Incorrect" a gorey death metal riot that forces you to play it loud. And track that suprised me the most "to all that are dead", this song suprised me as i am not a big fan of breackdowns yet they seem to work on this.
unfortunatly no band is perfect and this album has some serious downfalls. for instance although the intrumentals are impressive they do at times feel a bit tacked on to increase the length of the album. Also a few of the songs, despite being fun at the time, arnt that memorable which is a real shame.
to finish this album is bar far an improvment on the bands debut and sheer sensation breaking through in the current extreme metal scene

While those sneaky melodic leads around the corner make the listening experience more enjoyable, it still suffers from the same flaws as The Somatic Defilement; predictable, monotonous breakdowns, the intense atmosphere that doesn't light up one bit, and the fact that This Is Exile doesn't reinvent the wheel this time around.

It's easy to see how so quick to evolve Whitechapel really is. Their debut album was solid, it showed inspiration on the members' part. This album on the other hand, doesn't portray those similar traits. Rather, it shows how the bands' reluctance or their desire for a new sound right off the bat confuses them into disregarding the decision as to whether or not they could, instead whether or not they should. In the end, you get a pretty boring album with little to offer. On the other hand, the dual vocalist tihng going on in here does give back a little bit to the overall trite composure.

Despite good breakdowns on "Exalt" and "Messiahbolical", I find the screamer's vocals a parody at times. I don't know why. I usually don't complain about screaming vocals but this is just silly.

A really, really great listen. I like this album because it moves away from the (let's face it) bland genre of metal. The riffs are catchy like none I have ever heard, and Phil's vocals are really what makes this worth listening to.

This Is Exile is an album full of the traditional deathcore stuff: drop-C guitar chugging, blast beats, ineligible vocals, and breakdown after breakdown after breakdown. Granted, Whitechapel doesn't overuse the breakdown quite as much as some other bands in their genre, but honestly: what is the point of starting a song with a breakdown? Oh, and while on the point of things which have no point, the bassist might as well have stayed home during the recording of this record, seeing as you can't hear him anyway. Moving on... there are also two instrumental tracks on here that try and break things up a bit- the first, "Death Becomes Him" is a pointless chugging exercise, but the second "Of Legions" actually features some cool sound effects- it's just a shame that there is so much repetitive chugging on top (I wouldn't mind it if there was some variation). Closer "Messiahbolical" is one of the highlights, though they are few and far between. Don't bother with this.

I was midly excited about this album due to me seeing this band at summer slaughter. This is Exile is not only a downgrade from the somatic defilement, but its terribly boring. The lyrics are recycled and unoriginal. Too many breakdowns. Ick.
