2.5 average | Xenophanes EMERITUS | March 17th 18 | Didn’t see what all the hype was about until the cleans came in at “A Home” then I remembered how basic you all
are and it made sense.

4.5 superb | Panzerchrist | March 12th 18 | Imagine if Fallujah hadn't crawled so far up their own asses they were playing their colons like musical instruments and you've got Rivers of Nihil's 'Where Owls Know My Name'. Varied, sonically expansive and possibly the strongest material the band have ever put forth.

2.5 average | Brendan Schroer STAFF | March 31st 18 | This morning, I woke up. Then I went downstairs and ate breakfast. Then I went outside and got an iced coffee
from my local Starbucks. Then I went shopping for records and movies near the beachside area. Then I ate lunch
at a sushi bar. Later in the day, I happened to catch a movie at my local AMC theater. I am now winding down
with some TV before I head to sleep.
Now... did you give a fuck about any of that? Telling you each mundane detail of my day would be pretty
inconsequential and pointless. That's also what listening to this album feels like.

3.0 good | 8genre | March 30th 18 | Some of the sound scapes are really interesting but the band lost something special. this has some great ideas but they aren't fully fleshed out. The band was never amazing, but their older music is fun and catchy and that was lost in the ambition of this album

3.2 good | Trey STAFF | March 27th 18 | Great, creative, progressive death metal that manages to be melodic, diverse, and heavy, as well as creative yet focused. Kind of a breath of fresh air for a genre that frequently lets its cheese slide right off the cracker.

4.5 superb | TheManMachine | September 19th 18 | Come to think of it, exactly what I hope for in an extreme-metal journey of epic proportions: all-consumingly heavy yet crisply-n-punchily produced, elaborate flow that don't overelaborate, intense both sonically and emotionally, synth odysseys on top of model tech-metal madness, the softie skills to balance the extreme. Their prog keeps busy and blows mind without kneeling to nonsense noodlin', winningly decipherable roar vox devour ya whole while making room for cleans/shrieks/murmurs, jazz flourishes are conducted with wistful+whimsical grace; at times reaching full-on beach level. Not that you won't hear every one of these absurdly talented gents loud and clear, but if you find the drums to be too deafening it's probably cuz they deserve to be. One more great trait that well-formed albums should possess -- a finale that reprises the intro and singlehandedly encompasses everything that makes said album awesome.

2.8 good | Erwann S. STAFF | September 28th 23 | Where Owls Know My Name could have been awesome with its sax-tinged tech death. The issue is: you gotta have sick riffz because you're still a death metal band. Their first two records were cool bordering on aight, this one is just aight.

0.0 | Blud Vidal | March 20th 20 | I came into this album with a healthy degree of skepticism due to the hype a majority of reviewers generated and the denigration a minority seemed to espouse. About six months later, I'd say Rivers of Nihil certainly deserve the lion's share of praise they've received for this effort.rThis album's theme is particularly prescient given the coronavirus outbreak, so I wanted to revisit it and give a proper rating. Though it's my umpteenth listen, I still find the album diverse enough to keep the listener entertained for the full hour but cogent enough to sustain a consistent sound. I admire Rivers of Nihil's ability to blend more prog elements into TDM; while they certainly don't break entirely new ground IMO, they offer something relatively fresh. rThe instrumentation is really well done and the harsh and clean vocals play nicely with one another. The sax feels quite natural and bounces off the lead guitar naturally. Drums could be a bit better mixed as could the guitar in places, but I won't quibble too much.rI'd give this album a higher rating if there weren't a noticeable distinction in quality between the first and second halves of the record. That's not to say the second half is poor, but the first is chock full of hits. Well, you can't really ask for too much, can you?

4.0 excellent | kheman1317 | June 3rd 19 | The album feels very fresh with lots of energy from the band members. The sax bits are really beautiful. Biggest complaint about the album is that there are a few tracks and some bits in some tracks where it feels very generic or bland.rFavorite tracks: "The Silent Life", "A Home" and "Subtle Change"

4.5 superb | Chino smoking it up! | December 4th 18 | Who says DeathMetal can't be relaxing? Classy and smooth release from Rivers of Nihil, going really "proggy sax&pink floydish" at times on this one. If you check their t/T videoclip you see them ironically dressed up as 70's psychedelic hipsters, which gave me a cool twist of "funny fellas".rRecd Tracks - The Silent Life; A Home

4.5 superb | VanFullOfSpooks | July 18th 18 | Probably my favorite album of 2018, the Sax is spicy and fits the mood of the album and compliments the songs. The progressiveness of the song does not feel out of place and the guitar solos are awesome while the drums are on another level. One of the best metal albums I have heard in a long time.

4.0 excellent | cjbizzlebizzle | June 8th 18 | After the first few listens it felt like 'Where Owls Know My Name' might just be too big, a bit repetitive and a saturation of heavy aggressive death metal. Luckily, this album is one of the most rewarding beasts of the year for repeated listening. Each and every listen reveals a new intricacy laced into the very impeccable blending of tech death, djent, jazz and prog metal. The composition of the 56 minutes is stellar and songwriting talent is on full display. Rivers of Nihil present a perfect juxtaposition between groovy riffs, wandering instrumental sections, soft interludes and strong choruses. They do well to present 'A Silent Life' immediately, one of the strongest tracks on the album, and match that intensity at many points throughout the album. The album feels like a story with many twists and turns, it almost demands to be listened to as a whole and not track by track. To anyone looking for something that is reinventing metal, don't expect that here. Expect a refined, superbly written and incredibly heavy blend of complex and diversely influenced metal. Also, shoutouts to the drummer and production, they find that perfect dividing line between drums that sound incredibly impressive but still sound like they are played by a human being.

3.0 good | NeurOHMancer | May 1st 18 | I changed the rating as I simply believed the album got too repetitive. At first listen I suppose it's easy to be enchanted with some aspects of the songs (the sax- omg), yet this just seems to me like another progressive metal album. That being said the band have some real potential and I look forward to seeing more of their material in the future.

4.0 excellent | BRAman22 | April 17th 18 | Having an album with a variety of different sounds can easily backfire. However, Rivers of Nihil are able to go from deathcore to more groove oriented metal to progressive shit that includes a saxophone with a good level of success. A very varied but very high quality album.

4.0 excellent | OldCrime | March 24th 18 | Pretty sweet tech deathcore, but not as forward-thinking and mind blowing as all the hype would suggest.

5.0 classic | Risodo | March 20th 18 | I listened to "Where Owls Know My Name" in its entirety traveling in the middle of my own thinking. How can an album be so great and impressive in the midst of a lot of bands that keep betting on it? Rivers of Nihil is standing out for this, creating a masterpiece that will be recognized in the future as a watershed. With a considerable mix of genres, an impeccable production and even the presence of a saxophone, i ask myself, "How can we not give a perfect rating for this record?".
