Mayhems de Mysteriis Dom Sathanas was one of the early Norwegian Black Metal full length albums. It included many greats of that eras scene including Hellhammer, Euronymous, and Varg. While many say the album is utter shit on these forums there is a reason that this album has influenced hordes of new bands. It is not because the riffing is super technical, or because it is very catchy. It is because of the dark feeling throughout the whole cd that captures what the early black metallers where attempting to capture. Ugly, dark music, that was a revolt against the current metal scene of the days. It succeeds in doing this, and by doing so earns a right to be a classic.

One of my favorite BM releases of all time, De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas packs in so much feeling of absolute isolation without even needing to know the lyrics. Attila gets so much hate for his vocal performance on here and that is shocking to the very definition of the word since he is actually really rather good on here.

Despite all the infamous events surrounding this album, music-wise this is excellent.
Calling this one of the most talented/capable lineups (well save for the vocalist Attila)
among the Norwegian second wave musicians wouldn't be too far fetched.
As this doesn't really have an abysmal production, plus having a few hints of death metal,
this would be a great introduction into black metal. Add there great songs with variation,
that's the recipe.

De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas is a textbook example of an album where the story surrounding it is far more interesting than what is found within. That story has been reported on a zillion times, and I seriously doubt that you're even looking for reviews of the album if you don't know it, so on with the work at hand. At the heart of proceedings is Euronymous' buzzsaw guitar, which while providing the album with a solid core, really isn't very impressive, particularly when compared to his contemporaries. Attila Csihar's vocal performance is interesting. hHs harsh vocals sound like an angry Popeye, but it's kind of cool and very distinctive, so he gets a pass there; however his attempts at crooning are terrible and make the closing track damn near unlistenable. Overall, what we have here is a solid album which has attained mythical proportions, largely due to it's morbid backstory.
