Something was up when Coldplay titled their album Viva La Vida. It's just not the same as Parachutes or X&Y. Tack on the or Death and All His Friends, and you've got quite a different outlook on Coldplay. With Brian Eno producing and the slightly edgier (not necessarily edgy for anyone else but Coldplay) album title, I was actually excited for the album. Even in my excitement, however, this album blew me away. From the one of catchiest songs featuring strings since "Eleanor Rigby" in "Viva La Vida" and the enhanced spaced out effects in "Life in Technicolor" and "Lovers in Japan", Coldplay expands beyond the soft rock ballads. Perhaps it won't be so gay to like Coldplay anymore.

I don’t see how anyone could hate the album, even if you think you’re too “legit” to like any album that’s mainstream excepted. Before Viva La Vida, Coldplay’s albums were basically filled with nothing but piano ballads, above average piano ballads to say the least, but I can see why people would hate them. These piano ballad filled albums sold over ten million copies, turning them into millionaires and soft rock superstars, but here is why I don’t see how anyone can give this lower then a 2. You would think that after making all that money and claiming all that fame Coldplay would just stick to what they were doing, yes? No! Instead they completely banned the piano from the writing process creating 10 brilliant songs, ranging from pre 1990 U2 like tunes (Lovers In Japan, Cemeteries of London) to the catchiest of tunes (Lost!, Yes) to, what this album thrives on, epic tracks like (Viva La Vida, Death and All His Friends) while stringing every song together as if they were chapters to a story. Even Chris Martin’s lyrical progression is surprising (“Those who are dead are not dead, they’re just living in my head. And since I fell for that spell I’ve been living there as well.” In 42) Creative, Catchy, Epic, I have nothing but good things to say about this album. So if you don’t like the album because of its mainstream success and/or the fact that Viva La Vida is sooo overplayed, think about a quote I once heard from a white boy “Don’t hate the player, hate the game.”

This is how every review of Viva La Vida begins, “After the boring ‘X&Y,” Coldplay have returned with a daring new experimental album that, while no Radiohead, is miles better than their last album.” The problem with this statement is that X&Y wasn’t a bad album because it wasn’t experimental enough, it was bad because the songs, for the most part, weren’t very good. The fact is that this album has worse songs than X&Y, they’re just dressed up in fancier clothers (kinda like Chris Martin himself). It is no A Rush of Blood to the Head. Not even close.

Everyone's guilty pleasure got a lot less embarrassing to like on this, their fourth and best record, but now Chris Martin wants to go and fuck it all up. Months after the release of the beautiful, inferably celebratory Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends, Martin commented that the band should break up after they turn 33. If that were to happen, the world would lose a band finally hitting its stride. The Brian Eno-produced Viva La Vida is a powerful, ballad-less tour de force from Coldplay, complete with exuberance, charm, and the heart they?ve been feigning for years.

Just a beautifully composed album. Every tracks stands alone well and it never feels redone. Even if you dont like coldplay you will probably be able to Like violet hill, since most people do. The band goes a bit more instrumental and expeiments a bit more, and it proves well for a bit more out there sound from their earlier so calm it pissed you off sound they usually sported. (I like A rush of blood to the head the most) Fantastic album and a great piece for the band.

You are the leader of a dishonest nation. For years, you would go and lie to your higher-ups about the condition of some ongoing war; basically, the superiors are aware that life on this battlefield is both cinematic and harsh, which is totally the opposite of what you as a soulless commander had mentioned. What does this have to do with Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends? The alternative rock band Coldplay pretty much never truly convinced us that Chris Martin has a limited vocal range. On their fourth studio album, this group implements baroque pop and artsy tidbits into their style, whilst managing to throw a cohesive album onto our feet. The result is a beautiful recording which will presumably take ages to digest. Martin himself sounds compassionate, with the other members of the outfit complimenting his graceful voice via balanced string arrangements and overall tireless craftsmanship. Those who are dead to me are not dead at all; they're just living in my head, it seems.

I just can't seem to get into this album, some of the tracks are listenable but large parts of this are simply boring.
There's also no GREAT songs that pack a punch compared to their other albums.

I owe part of my adoration for Viva La Vida to the experiences I associate with listening to the album (which of there are many), but I do not revere the album solely psychologically - Viva La Vida is a potpourri of terrifically produced and composed pop music that succeeds brilliantly on its own even before you even add emotional attachment to the mix. Expanding in every direction possible from 2005's lackluster X & Y, Chris Martin and gang's willingness to deviate and explore new territories (world music, more Radiohead, weird shoegazey, oriental-esque instrumentals) ultimately succeeds in creating what will likely stand as Coldplay's chef-d'oeuvre for many years to come.

Chris Martin and company were in danger of treading into soft-rock and piano drudgery on 2005’s X&Y, but Viva La Vida proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that Coldplay weren’t content to sit on their laurels for their fourth record. Incorporating world music styles, multi-movement epics, and some of Martin’s best lyrics yet, Viva might be Coldplay’s best album yet, and is certainly their most original and experimental.

I actually don't understand why everyone loves Coldplay? Someone I know, said they were the equivelant to the colour baige. They are just so middle-of-the-road that it hurts. Even on their supposed "OK Computer" record, Viva La Vida, where they were supposed to push the bounderies of their sound, do they bore to the very core. The worst part is that Brian Eno had to contribute to this piece .

Sadly, the last good album the band offered in their career. From the impressive arrangements, mixing, and still some solid songwriting that made the band interesting in the first place; Viva La Vida proves to be a solid (albeit concerning) precursor to their future sound.

Although it is a very good album, with some interesting concept songs like 42 or Yes. I'm kinda mad at it. Because, to me, the enormous success of Viva La Vida pushed Coldplay in a more poppy, dance sound, which made them significantly worse.

This is easily my favourite Coldplay album. Many great tracks on here, in fact it's very consistent. I like the asian motives that sometimes come up in the album, as well the idea of hidden tracks. These hidden tracks are underappreciated in my opinion, they all are among the best songs on here. What especially surprised me is the track "Chinese Sleep Chant" which is hidden in "Yes", and is actually very shoegazy. I would have never expected Coldplay diving into this territory. Also underrated here is the album closer, probaply my favourite of the collection.

I rate this album amongst 'problem childs' in my catalogue. The reason is that although it offers new characteristics and shows an advancement both in music style (introduction of violins) and lyrics, it cannot match any of the first two releases. However, I must admit that 'Viva La Vida' is one of the band's top 3 songs. Other ones that I found interesting were: ''42'', ''Lovers In Japan'', ''Yes''

Coldplay absolutely destroy their past effort X&Y, and come out with 10 ace tracks that are filled with catchy hooks, sweeping strings and new musical ideas, like chamber organs and booming drums in "Lost!". It also helps that they sound like a BAND now, rather than Chris Martin with back-up musicians.

Coldplay could've gone and made another weak album with great piano-driven ballads as their singles. They didn't, they got creative and showcased the whole band's talent instead of showing off Chris Martin's talent alone. Not a single ballad is on this album, instead it is full of inventive, fun, and new music and lyrics. Hardcore Coldplay fans who claim they love each and every track the band has ever made will be angry and say the band sold out to win an award, and they're right, this is not a typical Coldplay album. It is much better.

Color me surprised that these perpetually inoffensive Brits had it in them to deliver a legitimately good album. It?s not the "edgy" political statement that it was made out to be, but the melodies are solid and the production, courtesy of Brian Eno, is consistently beautiful. Sure, the lyrics are still awful, but kudos to all hands involved for making ?I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringing, roman cavalry choirs a-singing? something close to a catchy hook.

Usually if I was reviewing Coldplay, I'd have to go to Shoppers Drugmart first for anti depresants. To get through the first song. This album though, coming from the veteran depressers, is actually OK! Sure it has some depressing moments, and don't let that stop you from the taking odd trip to Shoppers Drugmart.
The opening track 'Life in Technicolor' is pretty good, and the album continues on its seemingly (for coldplay) merry, only semi depressing road.
But Seriously. Highlight songs. Life in Technicolor, Viva la Vida, Violet Hill, Strawberry Swing and Lovers in Japan. The rest of the tracks are good, and Coldplay delivers pretty good spacefillers, even if a few do need one or two anti-depresants.
The album wracked in 3 Grammy Awards, nominations for American Music Awards, Brit Awards, Q Awards, Peoples Choice Awards, NRJ Awards, and several countries MTV Awards, and brought home a total of 11 awards from various locations.
The Verdict-worth buying but along the way..a stop at Shoppers might be worth while.

A nice, almost shoe-gazey album from Coldplay that surprised me with it's quality. The individual songs are all pretty good, even if none of them are classics. But the real prize here is the overal atmosphere, which is cohesive and solid. A good comeback after the floundering 'X&Y', but still lacks the raw emotion and pop-punch of 'A Rush Of Blood To The Head'.

Face it, the only reason you liked Coldplay was to show your 'sensitive side' to help you get into the pants of that smokin' indie chick you never quite ended up hooking up with. "You know how I know you're gay?" - Yeah. Well, Viva La Vida showed everyone up didn't it? With Brian Eno on the production decks, Coldplay threw open their sound to capture a rocky edge that shot them into the untouchable realm of being liked that the smokin' preppy chick - now even the indie guys have a chance with them, if of course they aren't too busy being apathetically cool. And why not? With music this good, flourishing love can only be a good thing.

I heard a bit of this online when it came out and I wasn't too convinced. Violet hill sounded like the coldplay of old but after a flick through the tracks I just thought that they were trying too hard to do something different. I eventually bought the album and gave it another few listens, then I realised the genious behind the whole thing. Each song is wonderfully crafted and break out of the boring pop song mold and despite Chris Martin focussing more on the lower registers of his voice (I felt like some places needed more high notes) It's a really good come back album. Can't wait for their next one
