Extreme underrated by Schuldiner die hard fans and critics. I really like this record. Songs like Living Monstrosity, Altering the Future, Defensive Personalities or Genetic Reconstruction are absolute Dm classics. The lead breaks from Schuldiner and James Murphy are very cool.

Sacrificing brutality for flow and technicality, Spiritual Healing may not carry as much punch as its predecessor Leprosy, or any of Death's last four albums, but still manages to hold its own. This is also where Schuldiner started adressing social and ethical themes, once again implementing new things into what would eventually become the band's signature style. An often overlooked album next to their more impressive work.

Nowhere near the best Death release but not the worst (that goes to their debut, Scream Bloody Gore), this is a solid album that ditches the monstery gorey stuff about sacrificing people and actually inherits minor progressive influences that the last four would build off. The first two songs and the title track rule the hardest on here but the whole album is pretty consistent and strong

More polished, more refined, more consistent and more sinister than either of its predecessors, and hinting at the capabilities Death would later demonstrate. Spiritual Healing's evolved approach sets the bar high for death metal at a time when many bands were still toiling in bare aggression, and somehow remains generally underrated in the canon of Death

If any death metal album can be overlooked, it's this one. Chuck started to break away from repetitive gore influenced death metal and began writing insightful and more meaningful lyrics, i.e. Altering the Future, the highlight of this album. I would say there is a bit of a thrash feel here that really adds to the album. Vocally, this is my favorite for Death. Chuck's vocals are raw, angry, and I prefer them to the later screechy vocals of The Sound of Perseverance (an excellent album). James Murphy contributes a balance of tasteful and shredding solos that send this album over the top. As far as drums go, the fills and rhythm work is great. I don't even play drums and I can see how simple Bill Andrew's lines are (compared to future Death drummers), however the drum work is really catchy. Listening to this album, I can't see why people think of this as Death's weakest work.

Okay, I'm a Death noob but that doesn't stop me from enjoying what I've heard. Spiritual Healing is a great album and I can't really find anything to complain about but there are some flaws in the album. For one, the songs can start to feel the same, I can't count the many times I've listened to this and not know the difference between the songs. The vocals can also sound a bit lame sometimes but it is still an enjoyable album. I thought this would be brutal death metal but when I listened to it, I can see this big thrash metal influence in here, from which I am accustomed. You can't help but nod your head when he's spitting out lyrics like "She's so naive, she's a stupid bitch!" The production is a bit on the weak side and the snare isn't very loud but his double bass skill makes up for it. The guitars have some cool, wierd riffs throughout the album but sometimes they can be pretty bland. I recommend this for old school death metal fans and thrash fans which aren't afraid to go up another level.
