This album is simply amazing. While the minimal beats, sparse instrumentation and thin production might speak of low quality, the opposite couldn't be more true. The instrumentation isn't the focus here. The focus is on Slug's heartfelt lyrics that cut through the bullshit and define his murky schism between loving and hating. This isn't Eminem's shock-based hatred of Kim. This is the result of immense heartbreak, and the deeply bipolar feelings that lay within. It is a journey through the fractured mind of a grieving Slug, one that can elicit deep feelings of sympathy (or perhaps empathy) from the pure emotion he pours into the music. In my opinion, this is the soundtrack to a breakup. EDIT: after re-reading this...it is extremely gay, but damn if it isn't exactly how I still feel.
Okay so it's not the perfect 5 i had it at...but i'll be damned if this isn't still extremely good. The first 10-12 songs are absolutely great lyrically, with Slug delivering heartfelt and personal lyricism at its best but the rest of the album falls short after that. The beats are pretty hit and miss, Mostly because Ant doesn't know how to make a snare drum sound right. However, the rollicking minor key piano on "Save The Day" and the depressive string samples on "Lovelife" prove Ant's capability to make almost perfect beats. An outstanding album only bogged down by the clunky last 3rd, Godlovesugly is worth a number of listens.
