Full of catchy riffs and flashy playing, Trivium's outer appearence is one of the most attractive in the modern metal scene. Unfortunately for the band, taking a closer look reveals generic, recycled riffs and arguably the worst vocals to ever receive praise. With 12 songs featuring only miniscule differences, the only valuable aspect is the soloing throughout the album, despite the fact that the shredding shows nothing above the hundreds of other metal guitarists around today. Trivium may have the physical ability, but their songwriting is the epitome of underdeveloped.

Forget the tech stuff I really enjoy listening to this band/album. I just love hearing other bands in there music, picking out the Slayer, Pantera etc its wicked. Feel this album gets slatted too much cause its 'cool' to slate a popular album.

Trivium is an absolutely amazing band and plays with the versatility and chemistry of a band such as Iron Maiden. The perfect example of versatility and agression is Ascendancy. Easily Triviums best piece of work "Although I truly do enjoy the crusade" and it is definantely worth remembering. Easily put, this album 20 years from now should leave a mark like Metallica's Master Of Puppets did. I think that they can steadily continue to grow and mature down the road. The chemistry is amazing and their so young.
Frontman Heafy is a prime example of versatility and skill. His ability to thras out a guitar solo along side guitarist corey and keep a steady beat while screamin a intense lyric, then smoothly transfer back to a melodic yet aggresive pace. Songs like "Gunshot to the head of trepedation" and "Pull harder..." show just that. every aspect of the record is amazing. Great drums, amazing guitar and a steady beat. The intro. "End of it all" is the perfect intro for a band like Trivium. Then directly afterword, one of my favorite songs "Rain" intensely comes in, kind of setting the mood for the record. Then once that track settles, the drums open up an awesome song "Pull harder on the strings of your martyr."
Today this may seem like another metal album just fitting in with A7X and present bands, but I truly think that Ascendancy shows a versatility of melody, Harmony, and absolute thrash. Putting you in different mind settings and tempos. Like the rage and fury of "Like light to flies" to the harmonic yet aggresive tempo of "Dying in your arms." You may think it's out of line to call this a classic, but Master of Puppets sure as hell is one and Triviums bringing that sound back more aggresive and powerful. I definently think Trivium should 20 years down the road be looked upon as a Metallica or Iron Maiden Band. One that's left it's mark upon people and I think Ascendancy may be one of the best albums out there. Trivium has amazing potential and will continue to rise.

Trivium is a strange band for me, because I saw them live when they were on the fringe of stardom. No one present knew who this Asian looking dude was, but it was obvious he was determined to get a bunch of wandering onlookers to chant "HEY!" along with his fist-pump action. A few people did, but most people just continued wondering who these acne-kids were. Trivium finished off with a plug to their new album, the track called Like Light to the Flies, and everyone was suddenly in to this show. A nobody band moved everyone in the crowd, and I mean, you moved whether you wanted to move or not. Ember to Inferno sucked, but it was all I could get my hands on. When Ascendancy was released, I was blown away. Every single song was epic. The guitar riffs were ridiculous. The clean vocals didn't suck ass, and were quite good actually. Earworm central. And my god, how hard this album was. And just like that, Trivium had blown their load. Every release from their on sucked, sounding like generic wannabe crap. It's a shame.

Trivium sucks. The Crusade is their best album, but it rips off Metallica and even Iron Maiden at some parts. Ember to Inferno is terrible as well. Ascendancy is painful to listen to though. RAWR RAHRAHRAH for 60 minutes. The songwriting is just typical metalcore garbage. The vocals are typical metalcore garbage. The musicianship? Sometimes it is typical American metalcore garbage. However, sometimes the musicianship is quite good. The drumming on Ascendancy is well-done, and even sounds pretty cool on some of the songs. And sometimes a track will have a half decent guitar solo, but the bass can barely be heard. Seriously. While sometimes the musicianship is sort-of well-done, sometimes it's just the band playing their instruments at the same time, doing random solos while the drummer is banging his drum-kit while the bass player is just playing a simple bass-sound. And sometimes the guitar just goes crazy and has this "WAHWAH-WADDIWADDI-WAHWAHWAH" sound that gives it a depressing Helloween sound. So overall, this a load of rat droppings. Ascendancy is one of the worst albums of all-time, and the only reason it's getting the rating it gets is because the musicianship is good every once in a while. While listening to any of Trivium's albums, you can figure out that these guys could be great. They could be Mastodon. They could be any of the other great metal bands out there. The thing is though, that they are not. They aren't Mastodon. So yeah, this sucks. 1.5/5.

i think the guitars are amazing in this band ,sweet soloing and DRUMS ...the vocals go perfect with each song and this album has a great opening "the end of everything" to a heavy played song ...what more can you ask for from a heavy album like this one !!

KICKS ASSES FROM START TO END! One of the best modern metal albums that defines how metal must sound today! My favorite Trivium's album! Favorite songs are "Pull the strings on your martyr", "Like light to the flies", "The Deceived" (The ending of the song is probably my favorite moment on the record), "A gunshot to the head of trepidation", the title track, "Rain", "Dying in your arms" and "Departure"...the whole album is perfect.

this album has always been one of my favorite metalcore albums, but that's not the reason why i'll remember this cd. my friend and i convinced our other friend to give this album a shot, and he loved it. this album was his transition from MCR and Fall Out Boy-type music to heavier genres like alternative, metal, and metalcore. we jammed out to this album until we couldn't take it anymore. we haven't listened to it for about a year now, but the point is that it made our friendship a lot stronger and this album will never be forgotten.

god i had this a 4.5 for so long. i just want to make this clear i HATE every song on here now. probably listened to this 60+ times. it has gotten so old that i gag when i hear it. but it was literally the 1st album with screaming a liked. just for that. 5.

This was an album that did a lot for me in my musical evolution. You could see Trivium improving and advancing into what they've become on Shogun, even if they did a backslide into soulless nostalgia on The Crusade.

ill agree with the drums not being tht exciting and the bass not being tht audible.. but (i think) this album does have a lot more goin 4 it than a lot of people say... i realise it's harder 2 understand the musicianship and the really good ideas in songs when it wasnt you who actually came up with it a wrote it...
taking a moment here 2 just say im not tryin 2 flame the review or nethin like tht just stating where i stand...
the transition thing u said between singing and screaming is true, but tht doesnt mean tht it doesnt always work..
i gave the 5 stars btw cause this album has done a lot for me, got me in2 real metal years ago and now being a more experienced metal head i still look back on a lot of these songs and can appreciate so much of what they wrote

Overall if you enjoy this type of Music then you really would want to listen to this album The intro really makes your ears sorta soften up to the intro explosion of Rain thru and thru its a overly Awesome album
however the song Drowned and Torn Asunder (track 4) REALLY SUCKED other wise its really good
If you purchased the special edition like i did the other to tracks really aren't awesome how ever the Master of Puppets cover really Show how inspired by Metallica they were and the Video Mix of Dying in your Arms is a much softer of the original which was dumbed down for the less heavy liking people

Trivium catches a lot of flak, too much if you ask me. Everyone claims them to be huge Metallica clones which frankly, is not true. While I cannot say that this band is awesome, I can say that are not as bad as everyone makes them out to be. Sure, their stereotypical quick songs with screaming get old such "Rain", "The Deceived", and "Suffocating Sight". They do have some very quality songs like "Pull Harder On The Strings of Your Martyr", "Declaration", and my personal favorite "Drowned And Torn Asunder". I'd reccomend this album to anyone who is a fan of the melodic side of american metal.

Trivium is a Sick Band With a Sick Lead Volcalist and Guitarist. The Solos by Heafy and Baleau are Strong and come in perfect timing with the songs. The Drummer is a Awesome Drummer and if you listen to him you can hear the double foot pedal Ripping it through whole songs sometimes. And Trivium and Atreyu have Amazing Screamers and Soft Voice. The Rifts are Good. And this Album is a great Album.

Though I'm into modern Death Metal/Metalcore-ish music (a lot actually), I can not really stand this band. Yes, the solos are good, but overall the songs lack something to really tell them apart. Not to mention the vocals. I thought I had heard the worst barfing with Atreyu, but these guys are really competitors for that place. I can see and understand why people love them, but it's not my cup of tea

A thankful improvement from Ember to Inferno, Ascendancy is what I'd consider Trivium's proper debut. While the final results are, as a whole, a bit meandering, it's a far more confident stake in the ground that accomplishes what it sets out to do. It may not be particularly original or remarkable, but if a band is improving, then it's at least worth acknowledging.

Every song in the album follows a similar formula. Trivium's melodies are very dramatic and thrilling when they succeed, the contrived screams actually giving them a more compelling edge, but the low points are pretty bland. No extra points for creativity, sure, but an engaging album nonetheless from a remarkably tight band. (Seriously, though, these guys need to learn how to scream.)

Trivium's "Ascendancy" is the basic commercially sold generic metal. Same Basic Riffs that draw the same crowds to gigs.Same Vocals that make them generic and the guitar solos that draw other guitarists towards them. It is hard to compare these guys to the title of "the New Metallica" they have potential but their just hard to be seen going that way.

When I first heard this album I hoped that like with many bands, the songwriting would improve over time and that Heafy would realise his canyonesque weaknesses with his current vocal style. Ascendancy has some impressive solos which serve as a testament to the fact that there is so much potential locked away in Trivium, if only the vocals and songwriting were fixed. Suffocating Sight lends hope by showing they can actually think outside of their tiny songwriting box.

This album is not revolutionary, is not wonderful, and is not awe inspiring. Big deal. It's something to rock out to. There's not reason someone cannot appreciate it at all. It's been a mainstream success, yes, but that does not discount it's catchy-ness. Not all music is a revolution. Deal with it. I laugh at the fanboys and despise the haters mostly because their arguments are dull and uninspiring. I would recommend not to review albums if you're going to make fun of it. It's not constructive and disheartening. Unless of course the album is worthy which I believe this is not. It is just another metalcore album...but I'll tell you what...some times, if I'm in the mood, I just want to listen to some metalcore and this does the job.

God those guitarists are orgasmic. In a way. I'll give them that they're incredibly skilled, but goddamn stop jacking your guitar off and compose a decent solo that require you to travel the distance of your fretboard 5 times (in 4 seconds). Mostly everything else is meh on this album, besides the vocals. Imagine even louder, less obnoxious, but even more horrifically destructive screaming than Atreyu. Thats where you'll find the screaming on this album to be. Just even worse.
