The Raconteurs are back and this time with a more solid release. This album is a clear improvement from their first album, and was a lot more enjoyable for me. With "Consolers of the Lonely" The Raconteurs went for a more funky somewhat retro sound, that was heavily influenced by Jack White's latest work with his ex-wife; "Icky Thump". The album is a lot more well rounded than their debut album, but I still think they are capable of much more, and hope that they release another album in the next few years that puts them closer to a 5/5, but currently they have earned only a 3.5/5 and I hope they start working towards their true potential.

I'm divided on this album. On first listen I liked it. Second listen I hated it. Third, I loved it. Et cetera. The Raconteurs touch upon myriad styles of rock music: blues rock, punk rock, pop rock, folk rock, indie rock, southern rock, and even a smack of arena/glam rock. That the band has the chops to pull most of these off convincingly is telling of their skills. That several songs don't seem to sit well in the mix (and, therein, their disparate parts don't always fit together quite right) is telling of the band overreaching their ambitions. Did they jam and gel after these were written? Did they intentionally muck their production to try to make everything appear as though it belonged? I hear too many cooks in the kitchen, and depending on which morsels of the finished product you happen to get, you may find the flavor either enticing or repugnant.

I always wondered what Jack White would sound like with a full arsenal of talented musicians. I appreciate how Jack White does not glorify himself in this band - but just a cog in the machine that is making some very, very good music! In my opinion, this music is of higher quality than White Stripes which is after all a one man show. But its also apples/oranges to compare the two. The Raconteurs stand on their own as a true BAND and not just a mere side project. I hope they have a nice long run ahead of them!
