3.0 good | manosg EMERITUS | September 14th 17 | Despite the promising line up, The Ferrymen's debut is a good albeit unspectacular effort. The brand of power metal/hard rock with prog tendencies these guys play brings to mind Dio's solo material, sometimes Symphony X or maybe Yngwie Malmsteen's more commercial moments. The elephant in the room is of course vocalist Ronnie Romero's similarity to Dio which is a given but Ronnie has his own style and is a very competent vocalist even though he tends to overdo it with his gritty/gravely approach. In addition, the songwriting is quite generic and the production makes the music sound even more run of the mill which is worsened by the unnecessary long album duration. Nevertheless, the band has a great sense for melody and instrumentally/vocally The Ferrymen are more than competent. In a nutshell, I would love a follow-up that is less generic, sounds warmer/less "plastic" and definitely listen to a less gritty Romero. Until then, I seriously doubt I will jam The Ferrymen's debut more than 3-4 times.
