It's been years since I've seen the sun.
Ever since we sent our Taylor Swift merchandise into space and blotted out our source of light and
warmth, Earth has been plunged into a state of eternal winter. Every so often, you'll see a cd
fall from orbit but the Taylor Swift Protection Agency disposes of these objects with the utmost
care.

I think the New York Times review is pretty spot on in this case. She does an admirable job of fusing other elements of pop to her signature sound. It's also a deeper album than one might suspect from the released singles. "This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things" has a girl group bounce, "New Year's Day" is a beautiful acoustic ballad, and "Don't Blame Me" as a sparkling R&B groove. Her voice is a bit limited on the album, and I was wishing for more songs like the more Taylor-like "Getaway Car," but overall the album is another big success for Taylor.

This isn't great, but it takes a bit too much hate imo. I still prefer this to her country stuff. Sequencing is pretty awful (cf transitions between 4-5-6-7) and there is one single jam on 11, but there isn't too much awful stuff either. 1 mixes a twerk/club verse with a 1989 chorus, it's alright I guess. 2 continues this. The Future feat feels very incongruous, although after it the transition back into Taylor's part (the best) is actually really sweet. Ed's take is boring although more congruous. 3 is annoying and skippable but has ideas. 4's better but also a bit boring, and shows how much she tried to go for nocturnal, city woob woob aesthetics with this one. 5 is a nice summery 1989 Taylor song and my favourite at that point. 6 is completely out of place and is the worst example of sequencing here imo. After the ok 7, 8 is kinda fun, and 9 is too in 1989 style. Not jams, but you know, not too bad either. 10 is an awful mixed bag of elements that don't go together with a couple scarce good sections, pretty symptomatic of the whole album. 12 follows the jammy 11 and is kinda cool too, but right after that 13 is quite dumb and 14 is alright but inoffensive. The concluding track is a soft ballad with pretty piano, which wouldn't be my choice but that I don't mind as a standout conclusion. Not much to retain with this one but come on it's not that bad. 2.7

This was rather underwhelming, I don't have an Issue when a pop star goes through a bad girl/bad boy phase. But this album was rather boring. the production is not very good and their are some fart synths on several tracks. This is also her weakest album from a lyric standpoint too.

We overrated 1989 and are underrating this. I think if she had just attacked the promo cycle from the "this is kind of my sex album" angle than the "this is my reactionary" album angle the critical community would've been more likely to see the record for what it is...basically the Max Martin songs are generally good and the Jack Antonoff ones are bad. r("Delicate")

I used to feel some remorse for occasionally making my car pool buddy listen to extreme metal when it's my turn. After being forced to listen to this in it's entirety today, I have no more sympathy. I wonder if the gas savings were worth it.

Reputation has a sleek pop sound to it following after 1989, and while it was initially disappointing with its sort of a darker shtick, it's grown on me.

1989 showed a confident, self-assured Taylor Swift ready to take over the world. And take over the world she did. Of course, that wasn't without its consequences, as we all know.
On reputation, Swift has had her confidence shaken, and she's lashing out. The defensive attitude shows itself everywhere, from the confrontational lyrics and song titles (Look What You Made Me Do, Call it What You Want) to the loud, but introverted and closed-off music. The EDM/trap influenced music is awkward at best, ill-fitting with a lot of Swift's lyrics. At worst, it makes her come off as entirely forced and unconvincing, evidenced by Ready for It and End Game's unfortunate rapping, and LWYMMD, which is one of Swift's worst tracks.
Far better results come from Swift reconnecting with her old muse (love) and adapting it to her new sound. Gorgeous has music that perfectly matches its playful lyrics, Delicate carefully navigates that introductory part of a relationship with a fantastic chorus, and Call it What You Want finds Taylor finding that confidence and honesty that made her so likeable on 1989.
It's a mixed bag, as a pop album with 15 tracks is inevitably going to be, but reputation isn't too bogged down by its worst moments (and those moments are pretty damned bad). And maybe after getting all of this out of her system, Swift will be ready to take on the world again.
