Emerging from Welsh's verison of American Idol, Pop Idol, in 2nd place in 2003, Welsh singer Aimee Anne Duffy, otherwise known as Duffy, almost lost all hope in making it big and fulfilling her dreams of being a singer. It wasn't until she discovered the roots of soul, and recent acts like Beyonce and Amy Winehouse that she was able to create her own 60s soul influenced sound.
Duffy and blues pop singer Adele were both signed to A&M records around the same time and marketed as the "New Amys" (in reference to Amy Winehouse). Artists like Duffy and Adele, as well as others are on the new bandwagon of the Amy Winehouse trend.
Taking hints from the Supremes on songs like "Serious", Duffy is able to take a new turn on the 60s girl groups we love, and that's what makes Duffy special. On songs like 'Mercy', she is able to infuse modern day beats into her composition with her rapsy blues voice to complete one of the biggest hits of 2008. 1960s and 90s pop infuses on her song "Delayed Devotion", which is the best song on the record, and the catchiest one as well.
Lyrically the album isn't great, and that is one thing Duffy and her songwriters most work on if she wants to be considered in "Amy" terriority. Like her song "Stepping Stone" suggests, she needs to "Step out on her own." But she's getting her feet wet, and I look forward to seeing what she produces next.

First of all, it seems Duffy loves more her vocal rather than to sing songs on this. After some listening those vocal tricks just make me feel sick and tired. Songs lack of personality which is essential thing in popmusic. Better ones sounds like someone brought them from other artists. "Mercy" is the only song where Duffys vocals actually fits with the music, but again, isnt it some kind of modern "Should I say or should I go" ? Too academical, too ordinary and simply not good enough to remember for a longer time. Thought it seems "Rockferry" song has something that you can describe as feeling not just music production, which whole album is. Afterall it is world class record. OK, I will give it 3.
