much like injury reserve's floss last year, here comes a mixtape so good, so left field, so refreshing it might just turn you into a stan of the group that created it immediately! this is the perfect mix between hip hop, pop and heavily auto-tuned tracks, with all the songs delivering in quality, both lyrically and instrumentally. in an overall disappointing year for hip hop (some amazing ones but only a few albums were truly great), this project feels even more essential. you might be turned off by the amateurish, youthful sound going on from start to finish but keep in mind these guys met each other on a forum and the rest is history. for now, go listen to it. 4.5

A fantastic blend of authentic, charismatic bangers and soulful, mellowed, and well produced ballads. Saturation puts BH on the map with its brash, get charming attitude.

The release that started it all and frankly not my favorite. Although it has it's memorable moments and great tracks, the melodrama of some of the tracks rivals that of a TV soap opera, which is made worse with some sub-par flows and lyricism casually being thrown at the wall by anyone who isn't Dom or Ameer (yep, that bad).

It's undeniable that Brockhampton was the most successful band of 2017, attracting a huge amount of new listeners to their music. With a trilogy all released last year, the Hip-Hop "boy band" has already established their style and has shown that their music... is just regular. Nothing against this new strand, but it seems that their debut album has a hard time sustaining itself to the end. I didn't listened too much of the three albums, but as i've already heard them, i can see that the first album in the trilogy is the weakest at the moment.

Simply put one of the best hip-hop records from end to end of 2017. Brockhampton do well covering all the bases from bangin' hype tracks like BUMP to slower, more emotive tracks like FACE and they fill in the space between with plenty of approachable hip hop, pop rap and alt. R&B feels. Many people seem to be set on drawing comparisons to other modern acts but Brockhampton's hip hop boy band description fits very well and as a whole the act just feels extremely fresh. This freshness is great with Kanye, Kendrick and Vince Staples releases dominating popular hip hop as of late. Brockhampton provides a nice contrast to these artists and their in-your-face flair is unique with so many different personalities coming onto the mic in SATURATION. To add to the obvious strengths of the album, Brockhampton do a good job telling their own stories and avoid relying on the stereotypical trap rap topics that dominate on most popular rap radio stations. They are passionate, playful, very introspective and as a whole a really eclectic mix of personas that come off as naturals in the hip hop game.

Newly designated as the favorite up-and-coming hip-hop collective for so many, there's a lot of things to like about Brockhampton. Though ardently hyped and fawned over as a "refreshing" act, Brockhampton is less a totally original take on alternative hip-hop and more an amalgam of influences brought together and expressed in a way few are doing. While that doesn't necessarily mean the songwriting is fantastic, which it certainly is not on some tracks, more often than not Brockhampton seem to be in a nice groove throughout SATURATION. The moods and the production that shapes them change quite frequently (one could go so far as to say it's a bit "scatter-brained"), but the emcees here are all up to the challenge of grounding things with their presence. Inconsistency is a bit of a problem here, with some weak hooks, pointless skits, and songs that go nowhere (I.E. "WASTE") clogging things up a little. Still, from what I can tell, they seemed to have ironed this out in a few short months, so it's good to see they're capable of improving and quickly so. The highs on this thing are super high, though, and it's definitely one of the hip-hop albums you should hear this year among others.

Formidable hip-hop collective that may initially turn heads with their blue ones or by moshing in the streets of South Central, but truly noteworthy is their ability to both go harder-n-nastier than most and soft-n-sappy so convincingly. Armed with a tight+detailed production crew and emotionally protean throat roster, each representative of this misfit-leaning boy band seems to be going out on a financial/personal limb to do this thang and that cumulative passion shines through. They're missin' Mama's kisses and chicken nuggets while out in the shadows with bullets and bad habits, taking acid and spilling brain, thumpin' in that trunk but playing some guitar too, twisting belligerence into self-improvement and pining for a sofa pal. Said roster synthetically swollen and kinda unclear due to pitch shifts and robots and flexibility for all. But off the top of my head: Kevin Abstract prolly most prevalent and the true hook maestro; Merlyn Wood a time travelin' Honda swervin' book learnin' Somali pirate lookalike who just applied for food stamps; Joba reserved for blood-curdling screams and fab falsetto; final track and only final track done by someone named "bearface."
