3.5 great | bharry | June 25th 17 | This feels like when Danny Brown followed XXX with Old. It's not that this is a bad album at all, it just isn't what I wanted from Vince. A lot of the songs sound like he's just going for a radio/club hit. There doesn't even seem to be a theme to the album or any of the songs. It feels like we got an average album from an above average rapper, which is underwhelming.

3.0 good | dihstyle69 | June 23rd 17 | vince staples continues to further push the boundaries of his music style and here, while doing so, he actually pushed some hip hop boundaries as well by bringing a really fresh sound to the table with the help of flume and, especially, sophie. mixing west coast beats with afro rhythms while throwing some minimalistic sounds to the mix to make for a more layered adventure musically, big fish theory's is probably the most ambitious and rewarding project since atrocity exhibition. some people will be thrown off by this sound though, so approach it at your own risk. great concept too. 4+

4.0 excellent | notkanyewest | June 26th 17 | I'm not sure what my pick would be, but it's pretty crazy to think that tpab/damn vs summertime 06/BFT is a legit argument, especially given that Vince is only 23. Here's hoping his sound continues to evolve, just as Kendrick's has.

3.5 great | FlipTrackz | June 25th 17 | There's a lot of great beats on this but I still feel like Vince is still coming into his own. His delivery and flow are leaving a lot to be desired.

3.6 great | Erwann S. STAFF | August 29th 22 | A cool album that doesn't let himself overstay its welcome (big yay), Big Fish Theory fuses Staples' rap with house-full beats (meaning: bouncy ass shit) and deconstructed stuff thanks to, among others, SOPHIE (REP). An interesting release overall, that sometimes tries too hard to replicate this aesthetic's greatest success - ie that try to replicate "Yeah Right" and "745".

0.0 | Jeffery J. Bigglestein | July 2nd 20 | Based, blackpilled, and consistent - Big Fish Theory doesn't waste your time with pointless filler at a quick 36 minutes. The self titled "Big Fish" goes hard, and Vince has a charm to him that makes FHT quite enjoyable.

3.5 great | Risodo | May 20th 18 | I think after nearly a year of its release, i can already consider "Big Fish Theory" one of the most overrated albums of 2017. I don't know... i didn't feel something so magical coming from such a talented artist this time. Vince Staples is on the prowl and will certainly make new, much brighter jobs. "Big Fish Theory" is forgettable to me, even if it is not a disaster and has few but good compositions.

3.0 good | cjbizzlebizzle | December 29th 17 | Fantastic beats paired with same old Vince. Perhaps it is too much to ask but Vince seems to approach almost every song since Summertime '06 with the same plan. He seems bored or uninterested, sticks to a similar flow, uses the same tone and raps about the same few topics. He is a good rapper for sure but this album has some of the best beats and production for a hip hop album of recent memory and it seems like they mailed it in in the rap department. A lot of solid tracks but an end to end listen feels like you are getting the same rap over and over again with different, great at times, hooks and beats. More guest sections and some variation from Vince could have put this one over the top as the beats are to die for.

4.5 superb | Nicksput | November 3rd 17 | One of the most innovative rap albums I've ever heard. You get this type of experimentation and introspection often from gang affiliated rappers. The album mixes classic west coast g-funk and more current trap beats with house and trip-hop. There is a lot less of traditional 16 bar verses from Vince, but instead, a focused attempt at crafting atmospheric songs that don't fit rap's general v/c/v template. Vince is not the best lyricist, but he covers a wide variety of topics, and comes off as more thoughtful and bitter than most of his contemporaries. He handles most of the rapping himself, save for an excellent Kendrick verse and Juicy J chorus. There are a number of voices (Damon Albarn, Ray J, ASAP Rocky and some female vocalists) that add flavor to the album without distracting from the host. Beats are very well produced, and some (especially Yeah Right) are designed to blow out your fucking speakers. Best tracks are the title track, Love Can Be, 745, Yeah Right, Party People (not your typical mindless party lyrics as the title implies) and BagBak.

3.0 good | TheManMachine | July 29th 17 | Thinking back, Staples sure has been buoyed by beats and buddies. And that's very verified here. Arguably this is just as much his and hip-hop's album as it is commonplace companion Kilo Kish's and inventive electronic producers -- which ultimately does make for a pretty pithy package. But with all the best hooks being via guest and not exactly alotta charisma besides, it never fully meshes. Ya do gotta love blankly braggin' bout being boring and Kendrick on top of Sophie's jerky screeching though; and of course telling the one percent/government/president to suck it on the bodacious banger that is "BagBak".

4.0 excellent | Alabaster Jones | June 30th 17 | It's crazy how much ambition Vince Staples has and still is working with. There's always an overarching concept to his projects, and this is usually also reflected in the sounds of the music as opposed to just the lyrics. Big Fish Theory has some production that is out of this world, with influences coming through from hip-house, U.K. garage, hyphy, and some established west coast and southern sounds. Though the particular influences on those sounds aren't necessarily esoteric, it'd be hard to call something like this "unoriginal". Staples himself seems to have found a home in a smooth, none-too-flashy flow and a relaxed delivery, and static though he may be for the most part, he's almost a foil to the production in that he's relatively simplistic, accessible, and easy to understand, almost like a voice of wisdom calling out from the chaotic atmosphere it's trapped in. Love or hate it, you have to respect the steps the man has taken to make his strange vision a reality.

4.0 excellent | QuOnn | June 27th 17 | Love this album - but where's the love for Kilo Kish in this review? Her contributions add a lot to the album IMO. They're such a good team. Other than that, great review!

4.5 superb | PistolPete | June 23rd 17 | Finally a rap album comes out this year to contend against DAMN. for the throne. Staples' best beats to date (hands down) mixed with his vintage flow and lyricism. Quintessential shit.
