This album had a lot of things going for it. It seriously moves the floor for a debut album. It is definitely a top ten for my 2008.
The guitar work while not overly technical, sticks with you for a while. It may take a while to fully sink in. I love the drumming patterns. There is never really a dull moment. The clean vocals get stuck in your head. I think I walked around singing out loud, “It’s a portrait of a black parasite” for weeks.
Overall I must admit I was stunned at the sure weight this album had on me. I certainly hope that this band will continue to put out immaculate work.

Much too worthy to be passed off as an Opeth clone, In Mourning are probably the most refreshing progressive death act in the last couple years. There is no doubt that there are similarities between the band and Opeth, and that's probably not going to stop, since each band's music is pretty heavily rooted in progressive death metal and progressive rock (typically 70's influenced). It's more in the way that these guys put it all together that made them jump at me the way they did. Always nice to find hopeful new bands with solid debut offerings...hope they keep the good tunes comin'.

A great debut by a band that is just getting started. On Shrouded Divine, In Mourning express numerous influences from other bands that are all well placed. Even though there is room for improvement, In Mourning prove that they have the potential to improve in the future.
Recommended listens: "Amnesia," "The Black Lodge," "Past October Skies (The Black Lodge Revisited)"

I do not like Opeth. There I said it, though I see why so much people like them so much, it probably has something to do with the fact that I am not a fan of Death Metal. When saw In Mourning's Shrouded Divine on Sputnik at the beginning of the year just the vibe I got from name and album cover made me want to check it out but then I saw it's genre and it's comparisons I was completely turned off. Now it's December and while I am making my Top 50 of 08 I decide to check this out. Damnit, how gay am I. I passed up a year listening to this beast of a record. Whether you are a fan of the genre listen to the emotional powerhouse In The Failing Hour and lend an ear to one of the best Metal records of 08. And no, I still do not like Opeth.

Although some songs leaving me scratching my head and I am not a big fan of the small amount of clean vocals, I find myself listening to this album several times in a row.
In Mourning is Progressive Death Metal at its finest, although more progressive than death metal when comparing them to other bands in this genre like Opeth, still very very good. I bought the album after hearing 3 songs. They got me hooked pretty quick =)
