0.0 | Snide | March 2nd 17 | Not only does the first song released sound better than anything she's ever done, but the album cover is also a fucking masterpiece compared to her previous artwork pieces. I'm actually really hyped for this.

4.0 excellent | MeetMeAtBarItalia | July 2nd 17 | A testament to the power of pop songwriting when done right. Lorde is self-aware of the melodramatic nature of the music she is making here, but she is going all the way nonetheless. She brings all the intensity she can to her vocal performance, and her collaboration with Jack Antonoff creates a tasteful, textured and gorgeous electronically-tinged musical backdrop. Melodrama is admirably consistent, varied and emotive, reveling in the torments of young adult life and relationships, with a great sense of detail and observation.

anticipating a progression in sound.
Edit: Liability was fantastic. Getting pumped.

4.5 superb | coma2rium | June 19th 17 | An absolutely stellar pop excursion that has taken its rightful place as the summer album of 2017. Lorde explores new and familiar territory in equal measure, blazing a trail through the hallmarks of contemporary pop while carving out a few niches her own in the process with subtle experiments and deviations from the sterile and sleek sound she presented on "Pure Heroine." Dynamic and lovingly crafted, Melodrama sees Lorde come into her own as a songwriter and raises the bar to ridiculous heights in the process. Pop has had its share of winning moments in the last few years from Carly Rae Jepsen turning out to be an amazing songwriter, bands like Arcade Fire and Paramore making their last steps in their evolutions towards being all out pop bands, and now, Melodrama.

4.5 superb | Alabaster Jones | June 16th 17 | I'm probably not going to due to some potential releases, but I might as well call it a year for pop, because Melodrama has given me everything I could ask from the genre in 2017. Years have passed since Pure Heroine, which was a marvelously fun, atmospheric, and surprisingly mature record, and Melodrama sees an improvement on just about every front besides the choruses, which are still solid nonetheless. There's more variety in the songwriting, yet the youthful, nocturnal atmosphere stays intact the entire way. It has a maturity and a depth to it that is almost ridiculous to expect from a nineteen year old, but that's how high she's set the bar for herself. She's also gotten better vocally, as the heart-wrenching "Liability" and the strange "Writer In The Dark" will show. If Pure Heroine was about being young and not caring, then Melodrama is about pulling back the facade and realizing that you really do care about the things going on in your life, even if you still pretend you don't.

2.0 poor | Scornfyre | October 4th 22 | God I tried to like this so many times. I've been told it is among the best modern pop has to offer. But I just hate every aspect of it. I hate the minimalism. I hate the production. And most of all, I just cannot stand Lorde's voice. I remember back when Royals came out and was plastered all over the radio how sick it would make me every time I heard it. And I get that same feeling from every song of hers.

5.0 classic | TheGreatEscaper | December 21st 21 | From start to end, this album knows what it's doing and it does it damn good. Yes, it's a pop breakup album, but it displays so much depth in its lyricism and nuance in its songwriting that the tired label doesn't even begin to suggest. Antonoff and Lorde are just fully on the same wavelength here, and the production and her voice interplay perfectly. Melodrama is not experimental, it doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it does something universal to a level that hasn't been matched before.

4.0 excellent | PrincyAli | August 28th 21 | A house party but we're sad on the inside. 4/5 Favs: Sober, Homemade Dynamite, The Louvre, Liability, Hard Feelings/Loveless, Sober II (Melodrama), Writer In The Dark, Supercut, Liability (Reprise)

4.5 superb | beng360 | March 25th 21 | This album, if not for some minor flaws, would be one of the greatest pop albums of all time. I find that Lorde flourishes in this record more than in Pure Heroine, where a lack of production made some songs less enjoyable. With this track record, Lorde may go down as one of the greats in pop history.
Bump |
4.0 excellent | charlopiano | March 12th 21 | The songwriting, and lyrics are honestly excellent. It flows extremely well, Lorde delivers great vocal performances and the story the album tells is really interesting. Weirdly enough, I thought that the slower piano ballads were better than the bombastic pop songs. My only problem with the record is that I found the production to be a little inconsistent. It doesn't adapt extremely well to the changes in Lorde's voice and the booming bass, doesn't fit certain tracks where some would need more of said bass. It's gonna take me more listens to get over that little hiccup of mine and give it a higher score, but for now, it's great.

4.4 superb | Erwann S. STAFF | November 29th 19 | Much bolder than her debut, this is one anthemic and dense synthpop record. Musically, it's not surprising to hear mid-tempo glitchy beats with some strings (ie, Antonoff) during the late 2010s zeitgeist, but they are distinctive enough to not feel like feeble copycats. Lyrically, Lorde already proves she's much more interesting than Taylor when it comes to breakup-related songs. A clever and danceable pop record, what could the mass possibly do instead of being in awe? Edit: kinda obsessed with this rn.

4.0 excellent | angrytortilla | June 5th 19 | Okay, so Lorde gets even better with more instruments behind her. This album slaps.

4.5 superb | gofrosty | December 18th 18 | I never really fell in love with Lorde's previous material, save a couple tracks from Pure Heroin. I don't have much to say that hasn't already been said: catchy hooks, nice mixture of experimental and clean cut sounds, and the emotive and personal lyrics are all big pluses. Favorite Tracks: Hard Feelings/Loveless, Perfect Places, Homemade Dynamite, Liability.
Bump |
4.5 superb | Lucman | March 28th 18 | Melodrama is one of those few pop records that play out as a complete and cohesive experience, from naive love, heartbreak and resentment, to forgiveness and a mature and newfound look at happiness and fulfilment. It's a gorgeous stroke of genius and one of the best pop records in years.
Bump |
4.0 excellent | Katastrophiic | February 27th 18 | Surprisingly great pop album. Its ambitious and personal while staying super catchy. She taps into loneliness, the excitement of meeting someone and heartache. I slept on this album forsure.
Bump |
4.0 excellent | cjbizzlebizzle | November 6th 17 | Following pop is fun because writing a pop album that appeals to the masses (and in this case, truly the masses) and comes off as genuine, original and fundamentally solid is no easy feat. With Melodrama, Lorde manages to do all of these things with style and it all comes off as natural, her. Though few are buying this album for the lyrics (which deal with common pop topics), Lorde spins things and approaches them peripherally drawing on specific experiences and heavy use of metaphors rather than your typical breakup/love/party song anthem. They end up decent and nothing comes off as artificial. Lorde's vocals are not going to floor anyone but she has a great way of staying bittersweet but also producing an endless barrage of strong melodies. On the music side of things Melodrama is excellent. The electro/synthpop beats and art pop atmospheres are enagaging allowing one ot appreciate the rhythms and sounds that are found beneath Lorde's lead. To top that off, Melodrama has some of the best production in modern pop. Everything feels like it came from Mt. Fuji; clean, natural and crisp. A pop album that allows a natural artist to shine and also provides catchy, fun music is a job well done, Melodrama leads the way in this regard in 2017.

Bump |
2.0 poor | Jau Peacecraft | July 4th 17 | Horrifically mediocre compared to her her first two EP's & Pure Heroine. Lorde should drop the piano ballads like a bad habit, and learn what "melodrama" really means.

1.0 awful | someguest | June 26th 17 | I love when a 1.0 brings down the rating by 10 basis points.
Bump |
3.0 good | notkanyewest | June 26th 17 | I was a huge Pure Heroine stan, but I can't help but feeling like i'm listening to a different album
than everyone else. From a macro standpoint, it behaves like and hits all the checkpoints that a
masterful pop album should, but when you listen closely, the songs just aren't there. There's
especially something about the lyrics that bother me- they sound like they're written by a famous
person's idea of teenagers is as opposed to an actual 19 year old. The highs are still extremely
high though, I really love "Perfect Places" especially.

4.0 excellent | dihstyle69 | June 16th 17 | lorde finally proves people that she is much more than a one-trick-poney by releasing melodrama (not much in the way of melodrama, ironically), a fascinating yet raw look into her messy relationships and what she has learned, or not, from them. lorde is much more mature, not only lyrically but vocally as well and even in terms of taking more risks musically, which more than often pay off. she still has that youth very present here, though, which sometimes lights a little spark in the middle of all the darkness. writer in the dark liability and supercut are easy standouts. 4
Bump |
4.0 excellent | TheSupernatural | June 16th 17 | Apt title but a great album. It's much more ambitious and personal than Pure Heroine, and while it doesn't always work, it's impressive when it does.
Bump |
4.5 superb | FlipTrackz | June 16th 17 | Okay real talk. Lyrics are great but the actual music is lackluster. Seriously, I know she can
write great catchy hooks, I don't know where the hell they are?
EDIT: disregard all this. this album is great.
Bump |
4.5 superb | Alex Stephenson | June 16th 17 | Wannabe teen-pandering pop artists should take a few lessons from Lorde: there's nobody in pop music today doing a better job of parlaying the teenage struggle into musical form, in this case the mindset of a brand new adult and a more mature perspective on the world than what is represented on her debut. It helps that Melodrama is a fair bit more sonically interesting than Pure Heroine, too.
