Daunting in scope and lush by nature, Fen are in complete control on Winter, an album that absolutely epitomizes what atmospheric music should be. The way they're able to craft such a convincing soundscape almost entirely through playing guitar, bass and drums isn't just commendable, it makes the album feel as natural as The Fens themselves. Definitely one of the top contemporary black metal bands to keep an eye on for the coming years.

While this record isn't stricken with the type of piss-poor production quality that plagued this group's earlier releases, the musical approach remains as sterile and dime-a-dozen as it always has been.

There have been a boom in atmospheric black metal as of late but that doesn't mean that everything that appears in this genre in good. Fen's last effort is good and every song gives you hope that is going to be great, but every single one fails to achieve greatness. The fact that it ticks at almost 2 hours doesn't help as well. Couldn't listen all the way to the end...

Surely a solid crossing of metal that's black and rock that's post, ambitious too with six massive tracks in an hour fifteen. But all those aspects come off a bit middle-of-the-road here, considerably cohesive and occasionally electrifying they may be -- an intense well-executed epic on the whole but couldn't help crave something more-often vehement; further brutality here, increased bleakness there. And this length: I know Winter's long, but dayum.

Winter is a bit of a giant with a 75-minute run time and massive track lengths but one that deserves the attention thanks to Fen's ability to knit together a coherent musical experience. The ebbs and flows of the album are all well placed and it feels that every buildup is executed with precision and most importantly emotion, Winter just has a very natural feel to it. Throughout the experience Fen meander from slow atmospheric pieces to post-rock riffs to some of the most intense black metal of recent memory. The album as a whole feels a bit like a film; one with a careful and skillful director. III and IV are some of the most memorable passages.

Bit long-winded for me, but thats just my taste in post-rock/bm. Absolutely nothing objectionable about this otherwise. Good stuff.
