3.5 great | InsomniacDozer | November 14th 16 | metallica sounding very comfortable in their own skin - while death magnetic felt like an remulation of days past, hardwired sounds like an album that the band wrote in the present. the rsongwriting is genuine, thoughtful, and energetic. not their best work, but as a longtime rmetallica fan, it makes me smile to hear them put out an album that's this enjoyable in r2016. to be fair, though, it really didn't need to be a double album, and loading the back half rwith midpaced tracks wasn't the best idea. still, most of the material on here is incredibly rsolid. favorite tracks: halo on fire, here comes revenge, spit out the bone

3.5 great | MalConstant | November 14th 16 | I am really enjoying this. I feel like a teenager again hearing new Metallica music that isn't
mediocre. There's some really good tracks like: Spit out the bone, Dream No More and Halo on Fire.
I'd give this a higher rating if Lars Ulrich wasn't the worst Metal drummer of all time. The
drumming is too generic and better fills would elevate the sludgy/doom feel on some of these
tracks. I just can't ignore the fact that there's about 5 different fills Lars uses on the entire
album. Can you imagine what this album would sound like if they had Gene Hoglan behind the kit?
Luckily, the rest of the band carries the performance very well and James sounds better than he
has in about 15-20 years.

3.5 great | Voivod STAFF | November 20th 16 | Prior to this one, the last Metallica album I remember enjoying was Black Album, for reasons all too obvious. With the band admitting its increasing physical inability in appropriately bringing classic/legacy material to life, the vigor of this album comes as an unexpected, but welcome surprise; Metallica still have in them, a fair amount of that something that made them what they are today. Favorite songs: Dream No More, Spit Out the Bone.

Like, I wanna rock the fuck out but also turn this off and put on something with more life to it. It's beautifully conflicting.

3.0 good | FirstStrikeIsDeadly | November 17th 16 | Metallica's much-belated true followup to Death Magnetic ain't half bad, but almost every track is like one or two minutes too long. That being said, James Hetfield clearly has a newfound interest in vocal harmonies, which leads to some of the more interesting moments on this album. It's also bookended by two solid thrashers. Hardwired is their briefest song in 33 years, and that brevity really works in its favor. Spit Out the Bone is also fast, but over twice as long. But hot damn is it the best song on this album. With all its riffs and energy, it definitely earns its place with songs like The Outlaw Torn, No Leaf Clover, -Human, and All Nightmare Long as among the best of Metallica's post-80s output. Other highlights include the riff-dense Atlas Rise, Moth Into Flame, and Halo On Fire, which settles into some surprising last few minutes. Lyrically, it's very corny, but I actually like that. It gives it sort of a campy vibe. After all these guys are playing metal their 50s. Dull in some spots, great in others.

4.5 superb | jayt851 | November 15th 16 | This album is great because they aren't letting anyone force them to play. Metallica is playing what they want which is the right thing to do and it has some good jams on it.

3.0 good | cjbizzlebizzle | December 29th 16 | 100% Metallica and somewhere between Black Album, Justice and the Load series in style with the bluesy style of the later albums blended with a pinch of heavier thrash elements. Hardwired... manages to sound like the 90s and late 80s but still fresh enough to please Metallica fans in 2016. While this could be construed as a great album, it just feels like Metallica is playing it a bit too safe and familiar here where Death Magnetic strayed further; making it a more interesting release. The biggest issues with Hardwired are the lyrics, cheesy at times, and the sheer length of the album. Many of the songs feel like they would make amazing B-sides and end up diluting out the truly great tracks like Moth into Flame, Halo on Fire and Spit Out the Bone. Metallica continue on with their signature styles but maybe at this point, 35 years and 11 albums in the spotlight, there just isn't much to expand upon. Metallica still put perhaps the best live show for the giant metal bands and it will be great to see some of the highlight tracks from Hardwired weaved into the live set; similar filtering of this album would have gone a long way.

2.5 average | marf1300 | November 17th 16 | Unfortunately, this album was written by Mehtallica, and not the band in the 80's that was one of the greatest metal bands. Hardwired has some great riffs and few funky bass lines, but not enough to keep anyone awake for 80 minutes of otherwise OK music and painfully boring drumming.

3.4 great | Trey STAFF | January 13th 23 | Throughout Hardwired? To Self-Destruct?s extended runtime, it becomes pretty clear that this is the sound the band is comfortable with. With few exceptions, that sound seems to be one that uses the riffs and song structure blueprint of Justice, the crunch and tempo of the black album, and the hooks and songwriting from Load. To be honest, that mix works pretty well and leads to Metallica?s best release since the early 90s. There?s no attempt to recapture their classic sound, no blatant radio single, and not even an attempt at performing more than what they?re comfortable with. If you?ve followed Metallica beyond the black album, you?ll find a very good, honest, release in Hardwired? To Self-Destruct.

2.5 average | XSebbyMcMuffinX | October 11th 21 | + Some of their best post-Black tracks. + Memorable riffs, appropriate energy. + Performances hit the mark, although - Kirk Hammett improvises his solos and you can tell in a bad way. - Bloated track-list; it's too much for one sitting / worth skipping parts of. = Overall, a worthy entry into the Metallica canon. Not too bad, not too impressive, but good enough for their status to fit them naturally.

2.5 average | Blud Vidal | April 23rd 20 | I mean, it was a hell of a lot better than it could have been. HtSD truly sounds like a vintage Metallica album, and given their track record that's rare praise. There are definitely some certified hits on this baby, and I find a hell of a lot more redeeming qualities to this than most of their work since the 90s. Still, though, it's a bloated effort straight from a money machine. There's not much fresh here, though there's a reasonable quantity of energy for a group of old farts. I'm not exactly disappointed overall, really, just a bit bored.

4.5 superb | BekoTuran | March 1st 19 | Metallica summarized their entire career with Hardwired... to Self-Destruct. Those precious moments has lots of thing to get emotional. They aged and they're still kicking it. And I believe they will after some time too. People tried to change Metallica. "Do the thrash stuff." Guess what, they don't want to do that stuff. And it's okay. That's the way inspiration comes from. All I ask from Metallica is, don't block that way. Whatever comes from there, I'm ready to hear it.

2.5 average | blakeguitarist2 | August 20th 17 | Best thing they've released since the Black Album, though that's not saying much, this is a step up from Death Magnetic, especially production wise, the length is a big drawback on here, Hardwired revisits Kill Em' All but not Kirk's high point solo, but still good nonetheless, when it gets to Moth Into Flame and Halo On Fire, the Metallica goodness kicks in, Dream No More is yet another throwback, but towards Sad But True, Spit Out the Bone is perhaps the best song they've made in a while, and James's vocals are top notch. But after the first half of the album, it does not hold up. ManUNkind has a great intro, but is a complete clusterf**k in the end. Am I Savage and Murder One are snoozefests and doesn't bring much. Here Comes Revenge tends to drag. In the end, it's a great album, but it'll never be another Ride the Lightning or Master of Puppets. Highlights: Hardwired, Atlas, Rise!, Moth Into Flame, Dream No More, Halo On Fire, Spit Out the Bone

Bump |
3.5 great | Robbit | February 15th 17 | Metallica's 9th studio album HARDWIRED ...TO SELF DESTRUCT is a thrashing and energized collection of songs that finds James Hetfield leading the charge. In fact, it's really James spirited performances that help the album find its pulse. This isn't to fault anyone else in the band, but you really get the sense that it's Hetfield in the drivers seat this time around. And this is GOOD thing.rLike DEATH MAGNETIC, the songs often seem at least a minute longer than they need to be. This is fine on tracks that have several interesting ideas to incorporate. However, it's the relative brevity of "Hardwired" that makes it such a potent opener. Still, the band do sound like they're enjoying themselves while viciously grooving on the lengthier songs.rInevitably, it comes down to whether these songs are strong enough to stand the test of time. I'll admit that I had bit too much of a love buzz for this album when it first came out. As the haze has been clearing, I've realize that this is a "great" album, but not quite on par with their first five records. In many ways, it feels like an homage to their earlier work. I think we'd be expecting a bit much to have them write another MASTER OF PUPPETS at this stage in their career, so I'm at least grateful that they're on the right track again.

4.0 excellent | Antonius | February 14th 17 | Hardwired.. was a great attempt of Metallica to build on the mediocre Death Magnetic and the repulsive St. Anger. It contains all the aspects that made the band great over the years: the thrashiness of their youth ("Hardwire", "Spit Out The Bone"), the melodic riffing ("Now That We're Dead", "Here Comes Revenge") as well as influences from their 90s escapades ("Am I Savage", "Halo On Fire"). I find it difficult to distinguish bad songs, despite the two major flaws that are apparent: lyrics and Kirk's average solos. Recommendations: "Atlas Rise!", "Here Comes Revenge", "Moth Into Flame", "Halo On Fire"
Bump |
3.5 great | BRAman22 | February 12th 17 | Hatfield sounds great on here. Other than that there are some Metallica sounding riffs; some sound like they could fit in on AJFA and others on the black album, while others would be more at home on Death Magnetic were it slowed down. It's a good album with some songs that I'm sure would be fun live, but as with any band 30+ years in its not all quality. Honestly, I think this would have a higher average score if it wasn't Metallica, and therefore held to such high standards.
Bump |
3.0 good | rockandmetaljunkie | January 18th 17 | Hardwired to self-indulgence and introspection. Metallica's tenth record sees them finally enjoying the process of studio recording without letting any background noises screwing with their mentality and concentration. It's probably their first album since their debut where they sit down to record music without having the urge to release something extraordinary. And that freedom pays off.

3.5 great | Jau Peacecraft | November 23rd 16 | The 1st CD sounds mostly like Death Magnetic leftovers, & therefore is hot garbage.
The 2nd CD, however, is actually kind of amazing & has their strongest material since The Black
Album.
Strange; I guess they got paranoid about whittling down the album. The identity suffers.
Best Tracks: All of the 2nd disc
Hardwired
(great opener, wish they had done more shorter songs like this)
When A Blind Man Cries
(lyrics are very simple, but this is a great throwback to a bluesy Black Sabbath like
ballad)
Worst Tracks:
Atlas Rise
(repetitive; I went into Audacity & cut off the song at the 3:10 mark; everything afterwards is
mediocre masturbation)
Dream No More (fuck this song; whoever thinks this is "doom" inspired never listens to
doom or is an idiot)
Halo on Fire (terrible lazy ballad, so fuck this song too)
Moth Into Flame (bland; several songs do the structure & pace much better)

3.0 good | Herbie Chrost | November 20th 16 | I've finally concluded that this is the modern St. Anger. The band is sober trying to fight with every fibre of their soul to retain something pure to capitalize on and attempt to make an album based on what little understanding they have on it, being misguided as they are. It's a raw, honest portrait of the band at this point of time (this time with guitar solos!) and it's as bittersweet to look at as the first time hearing St. Anger for the first time

3.0 good | Xenorazr | November 19th 16 | I'm not sure why Metallica feel the need to make their albums so lengthy. If their music justified sitting down and seriously listening to for 70+ minutes, that'd be one thing, but they're still a casual (thrash) metal band, and no amount of cleaned up production is going to change the fact that this album really, REALLY didn't need to be two discs long. I grew bored before the first disc even finished and hardly had the interest to continue listening after that. Hardwired... sounds perfectly, well, sound, but there's just too much of what amounts to stale, uninspired material. It would've been better to release the heavier tracks as an LP or EP, depending on how long that would've been.
