3.5 great | dihstyle69 | December 3rd 16 | if you already embraced the fact that he's been pursuing new sounds for a while now and each album brings a new chapter for him and his music, you are bound to be surprised here. at 18 tracks, things could've gone south rather quickly but in fact, the album starts off on a strong note and ends itself perfectly too. up until the interlude with lana, everything was snapping big time. ironically, stargirl feels completely out of place musically speaking and it's also absolutely undercooked in its creation, fading away when it was getting remotely nteresting. it's a filler. things do pick up again with the excellent sidewalks and the momentum kept going until attention came in. things really got to a low point here, with the track being both too slow and not enough exciting for it to work. with the other two tracks right next to it, things got even worse. nothing without you is easily the most generic track here and the track with future, while decent, ends wirh an awful, pointless verse from him that adds nothing but lenght to an already overlong album. thankfully, the album ends with two fantastic tracks, die for you and the feel-good feel it coming, which opens up things for abel as far as his future goes, both artistically and in real life. the album could and should've been shorter, with those fillers hurting the overall quality of the album, but it still worked for the most part, with the standouts being really huge standouts and saving it from being just a merely decent effort. 3.5+

3.5 great | Daryl the Beryl | November 25th 16 | Overall, another satisfying album from Mr. Tesfaye. I may even prefer this to Beauty Behind the Madness. I recommend Starboy, Party Monster, False Alarm, Rockin', Sidewalks and Reminder.

0.0 | YourStarryEyes | October 21st 16 | Judging by the two singles, the album seems
promising so far. I'm really digging the 80's
electro cyberpunk sound he's moving to, it seems as
though he is maturing. Totally different sound from
his last album which is a good thing because it
shows off his innovation. It's also a good breath of
fresh air, something totally different added to the
whole pop scene. You don't hear much innovative pop
music like this much anymore. Gonna go with a 4,
because I really like what I've so far but due to
there not being much material out yet, I can't
really go higher nor lower.

2.5 average | Tjatkinson1998 | January 11th 22 | This album was very frustrating! The first half of the album was really good with catchy hooks and great dark dance-pop production and the Weeknd felt like he had finally found his place in the Pop world. However, the latter half of this project is bloated as hell and the uninspired lyricism and copy and paste formula of the production, makes this a bit of a drag. The features are also kind of disappointing again and feel half-baked. If some of this lesser material had been cut this would have been a great dance pop record, with elements of Rock and RnB influence. Still songs like I Feel It Coming and False Alarm shine and while Abel has lost a bit of what made him unique, he does have those vocal chops to make him stand out in the Pop industry. 6/10

3.5 great | PrincyAli | September 11th 21 | Damn, Abel loves his synths. 3.6/5 Favs: Starboy, Party Monster, False Alarm, Reminder, Rockin', Secrets, True Colors, Stargirl Interlude, Sidewalks, Love To Lay, A Lonely Night, Die For You, I Feel It Coming

3.0 good | Gibleson | September 27th 20 | Album would be a lot better if they had cut about half of the tracks there. Album is way too long.

2.6 average | Erwann S. STAFF | October 8th 19 | The songs per se are clearly not bad. However, I feel the album does not flow as good as it could (the gigantic length does not help). Some great cuts here and there (Starboy, Sidewalks, I Feel it Coming), but in the end it's tiring because of the so-many fillers.

4.0 excellent | LegendaryOrangeBear | May 24th 19 | Great combination of Alt. R&B & Pop music. As always with Weeknd, the vocals are top notch. Lots of very catchy songs. Production was very strong until the 2nd half of the album. The 1st half definitely hits harder.

2.0 poor | SmartWentCody | April 9th 17 | I can really only enjoy about two tracks on this. Great production value, but just couldn't keep my interest.

4.0 excellent | runaways | January 7th 17 | Starboy is definitely the best post-Trilogy release from The Weeknd. Unfortunately though, the singles off Beauty Behind the Madness are better than the singles off this. Even still, the record works better as a whole. It definitely doesn't bring anything new to the table but as a pop album, it's pretty solid. If it were to lose 3 or 4 tracks, it would be a 4.5-5.rBest Tracks: Secrets, True Colors, Sidewalks, A Lonely Night, I Feel It ComingrWorst Tracks: Ordinary Life, both fucking tracks with Future

3.0 good | Finn Baker | December 18th 16 | It took some time to grow. I didn't expect to enjoy this at all, especially since Party Monster feels like a huge nosedive in quality when it comes right after the title track. However, a lot of the songs on Starboy prove to be very catchy, like Rockin' and Sidewalks. There isn't much else to say, but it's worth a listen or two.

2.5 average | ThatNewDrizzyDrake | December 6th 16 | I really wanted to like this album more than I did. I loved all the singles coming into it and a few of the other tracks on it, but it's way too long and there's too much filler.
Bump |
3.5 great | Alabaster Jones | November 30th 16 | It's not quite on the level of any of his mixtapes from the vaunted trilogy, but Starboy is The Weeknd's best post-trilogy effort. It lacks the highs of Beauty Behind The Madness, but the constant and refreshingly high quality at which the album operates throughout its entire sixty-eight minute runtime speaks to the growth which Tesfaye has underwent in this year. His vocal chops are still phenomenal, as expected, and he sounds more comfortable in this production style than his previous full-lengths. The production isn't as bare-bones as his last two releases, as layers of instrumentation and infectious synth and beat work feature prominently here. Thematically it's not different from anything he's released, but it fits the aesthetic and the atmosphere of the album very well, so it's hard to criticize it too much. It also stands to note that it definitely doesn't feel like it's an hour-eight, and remains fun and enjoyable throughout. It's another great outing from The Weeknd, who continues to improve on his foray into more pop-influenced R&B.

2.5 average | cavalrycaptain | November 26th 16 | The very definition of mediocrity. The only genuinely "great" songs are the ones produced by Daft Punk, but even their talent is clearly wasted. Maybe it's because Abel put out 68 minutes of music just one year after BBTM, but most of these tracks are half-baked pop-lite that lack the gravitas of his Trilogy-era work.
Bump |
3.0 good | gotsthedewsdood | November 26th 16 | Definitely the strongest post-Trilogy release by him yet. Abel retains his newfound pop-sensibility from BBTM, as well as elements from his more ethereal work. Well executed transitions between many of the tracks make for one his most cohesive albums as well. One of the albums downfalls is its length, which kills the momentum in the last half. Standout tracks to me were Party Monster, True Colors, Sidewalks, and Reminded.
