Chuck certainly knows how to go out with a bang. Death's last work The Sound of Perseverance is one of their finest. The completely new formation does once again not let down, but it especially Schuldiner who amazes even more vocally than he ever did before. Employing a higher shriek which was his best yet, he works his way through 8 excellent, more progressive tracks, with as an added bonus a cover of Priest's famous Painkiller. An amazing last statement from the Father of Death Metal. Rest in Peace.

I used to love this album, but the more I got into death metal the less it resonated with me. It's not a bad album at all, but it's incredibly poorly paced, the riffs feel generic, and in general it goes on way too long for comfort. I like the Painkiller cover a lot and I didn't mind Chuck's vocal style here.rOh yeah, it also spawned a lot of modern technical death metal. And most of those bands absolutely suck.

Where to start with such an amazing album? It's not just one of the greatest Death Metal albums, but one of THE greatest albums in the history of music. The opener "Scavenger of Human Sorrow" which begins with fast drumming and later ear splinching guitar playing, and perhaps the most chilling vocal performance Chuck Shuldiner ever did in his whole career. We then move on to "Bite the Pain" which I believe to be the only week track on the whole album, mainly because i felt ther was no flow in the guitar work, but chuck's vocals were flawless as they always were. Next is the bass epic "Spirit Crusher" which I believe the second best song of the album, after the complete masterpiece that is the following track, Story to Tell. Story to Tell is the definitive track on this album and one of Death's greatest moments in its short history, It begins with an epic guitar riff and small solo and leads to another ,not surprising, amazing performance from Chuck's playing skills and vocals. I would recommend this track to ANY headbanger. Track 5 is the the 8 minute "Flesh and the Power it Holds". I have to admit I wasn't impressed with how the song started out, but the more it moved on, the more melodic and epic it sounded. Very good track and definantly one of the best from the album. Next up is the acoustic instrumental, "Voice of the Soul" which is a song that i would believe to attact anyone who listens to music at all. The middle section of the song remindes me of "Sacred Serenity" from Symbolic for some reason. Finally the the album end with "A moment of Clarity" which should appease any headbanger. So if any of you "metalheads" dont own this album already, you better get to the store now.

The absolute pinnacle of al Death releases, this one takes the prog elements a little further than ever before and in the process created a near perfect album. Everything on here rules hard, but Flesh And The Power It Holds and Scavenger Of Human Sorrow stand out as being the best things the band has ever recorded.

Probably Death's best album other than Symbolic, Chuck's last masterpiece. It's impossible to pick out a weak song on the album, with the execption of the Judas Priest cover. The guitar work and Chuck's vocals are the high points of the album. Chuck is one of few guitarists that can make the guitar have a voice and personality, shown specifically on Voice of the Soul. A must listen for any metal fan, or any music fan in general if they don't mind the vocals.

Chucks vocals were always my favorite thing abotu this album but it contains some of their most solid songs as well and was a great note for Death to go out on. Flesh and the power it holds, Spirit crusher and Scavenger Of Human Sorrow stand out as some of the finest metal songs ever. Something else worthy of noting about this album is just how well the death metal blends with the more progressive styling that was evolved even more from Symbolic. This really is a masterpiece that is worth anyones time and money and everyone should hear at some point in their life. If you have time, listen now. If you dont have time, then fucking make time-you will not regret one second spent listening to The Sound Of Perseverance, Chucks swansong.

My personal favorite Death album. I cant see how any band will ever come close to topping the beauty found on here other than perhaps Opeths Blackwater Park and one or two other albums. This is how music should be written with a lot of aggression behind it but never forgeting a melodic edge and Chucks finest vocal performance by some way. Flesh and the power it holds is one of the best songs ever written

Over time, this band continually improved. The guitar playing is the strongest of all their albums in my opinion, and even the drumming and vocals have been topped. Bass is surprisingly audible throughout the majority of the album with even the odd solo sometimes. This album, and this band, will live on for ages to come, and have become a cult classic to many.

This is a true death metal masterpiece, and ranks easily as the best of Death's progressive era in my opinion. The jazzy influences, the proggyness, the hard-hitting riffs, the vocal performance by Schuldiner, everything is just epically awesome. Definitely not a normal death metal record, but it's become a fast favourite.

Such high standards of instrumentation would be sufficient to make a respectable metal album, but Chuck Schuldiner is, apart from a superior guitarist, one of the greatest composers in metal. Amazing riffs and solos are allowed to achieve full power by the skilled lineup of Death, framed by what is possibly the definitive metal drum performance.

Death is one of the founders of the more technical/ progressive death metal genres. This was my favorite album by them, not saying its their best, more of a personal preference sort of thing. Listen to the bass at the first of "Spirit Crusher", you'll jizz your pants.

The Sound of Perseverance is the most suitable title for this album. Death's final and most in-depth album. Chuck Schuldiner's guitar work is phenomenal, the lyrics are superb and Chuck's vocals in this album (which are higher than the previous) has more impact than before. It is the soundtrack of epic wisdom and positive vibes portrayed in the darkest possible form. The entire album is a lesson of character-hood. It's a fine way of saying "Be kind and respectful, but also be confident and assertive and don't be walked on". At least to me anyway. There is no documented evidence that Chuck Schudliner was a genius; however evidence points towards this. Chuck got straight A's in school despite his lack of interest (he eventually dropped). Chuck's musical talent and technical ability is extremely high. He was a great philosopher (his quotes, words, beliefs, love for life, positive energy...etc) as well as a fantastic poet. It makes it all the more impressive knowing that he had suffered a lot through life. (losing an older brother, battling cancer..etc.). Plus he wrote The Sound of Perseverance. He was a polymath, I have no doubts about that. May he rest in peace, and his legacy live on foreer.

Not Death's best album, but still a damn good one. This is hardly death metal at all, actually - the vocals are mostly shrieks, the guitars don't really churn out low end riffs but rather focus on technical progressive leads, and the drums play complex and driving rhythms. Well, actually the drums are still solidly death metal. I prefer power to progressive-ness and that's probably why I don't view this as Death's best work, but it's still wonderful.

The Sound of Perseverance is the last chapter in the death metal legacy that is Death. From start to finish the album is full of progressive guitar riffs, pounding double bass, and excellent bass work. Lest we forget the vocal work by none other than Mr. Chuck Schuldiner, mastermind of Death; it is higher than it was on previous albums, but suites the music well, and only manages to add to the sonic brutality that is TSoP. From start to finish, every note, every riff, and every lyrics are perfect. Chuck Schuldiner managed to save the best for last, even though it wasn't intentional. R.I.P. Chuck.
