3.5 great | cjbizzlebizzle | November 28th 16 | After a Summertime 06, Vince Staples should be on anyone's hip-hop watchlist. The bleak and somewhat dark atmosphere carries into Prima Donna which features everything from bangin' beats to depressive spoken word interludes. At first glance the EP might seem a bit flat but with each listen it opens up and upon reviewing track by track it becomes obvious that just about every song is beyond worth revisiting. It becomes especially interesting when one takes into account the concept behind it; telling a story in reverse as the album progresses. Vince is able to convey a message with minimal content, hopefully this carries over into his next full length as Summertime 06 was way too long drowning out what were some of the best rap songs of 2015.

3.5 great | TheManMachine | November 8th 16 | Its ~22 minutes is an endorsed beeline after his overstuffed opus Summertime '06, especially when it's altogether punchier than most anything on said opus anyway. Beats have upped their bustling/bizarro game and Staples has no shortage of fire flows to match, an ample hook-per-track cert-don't-hurt none, "War Ready" is a proper presentation of the prevailing 'tude and also here presently on Election Eve. And there for discomforting counteraction are his bare-bones barely-able tape-player confessions and of course The Most Startling Gunshot in a Song Ever -- a condensed+eerie ebb and flow, if you will.

3.0 good | Alabaster Jones | October 13th 16 | Vince Staples is a pretty ambitious guy, revolving his projects around a concept that is fleshed out and followable. That being said, he's somewhat inconsistent despite this potential, and Prima Donna is no different in this regard. Songs like "War Ready" and it's excellent hook, and closer "Big Time", on which Vince drops a marvelous verse, are really great. Yet, the title-track and "Loco" don't really do much of anything, feeling much like afterthoughts compared to the aforementioned tracks. It's this difference in quality from track-to-track that is unfortunately a defining trait of Vince, but if and when he gets rid of it, it should be a fantastic listen.

3.5 great | dihstyle69 | August 29th 16 | great concept but unlike in summertime, things don't come together all that well by the end of the project. loving the unorthodox beats for the most part tho, defin complement vince's delivery as well as the topics being tackled here. not everything works but ep's are made for experimenting, though. it's nice to see vince going out of his confort zone to try new things before he creates his next, hopefully great album. 3.5-

3.5 great | iPim | August 27th 16 | Indeed an interesting offering from Vince Staples. This EP seems rushed on multiple occasions with songs that feature repetitive sections, abrupt endings, and extensive mumbling from Vince in between songs. However, stylistically this EP is quite different from the dark, moody vibes from Summertime '06. Instead, Vince pursues a more trippy, electronic sound as reflected in the recent tracks he did with Flume and Clams Casino. While this EP gets off to a rather slow start, from Loco onwards Vince gives us nothing but straight bangers, with the closing Big Time as one of his hardest songs.

3.0 good | Undertow | August 27th 16 | An interesting project, but it does seem to fall short because of it's length and shares too many artistic similarities to Summertime.
