I don’t think anyone has even accused Heaven Shall Burn of being original. They started out stealing the sound of Carcass’ Heartwork and mixing it with the modern Gothenburg melodic death metal sound. Eventually they had a large enough discography (one or two albums) to begin ripping themselves off and here we are. Wanderer is maybe a little more aggressive and riffy than they’ve been in awhile, but it’s basically another cookie-cutter Heaven Shall Burn release. They should be capable of more, but this is still pretty good.

A solid, one-dimensional record that is Heaven Shall Burn through and through, but little else. It lacks the unabashed riffage of their early era a la Whatever it May Take and also loses the visceral heaviness of their more recent material. What is left for Heaven Shall Burn is a highly streamlined, often cliche distillation of their own sound that is neither engaging nor very dynamic aside from a few outliers. There is little that deviates from what has become the norm - the same steady-state mindset that made Invictus so monumentally dull. It is still quality metalcore, and still carries their trademark political underpinnings, but the sincerity of their more notable works is eerily absent on Wanderer. With little fanfare yet notable length the album presses forth, forging little in the way of progress for a band that hasn't pushed the limits in 12 years. Fans of the band will find some moments to praise, but as a whole the album takes a seat firmly in the lower tier of Heaven Shall Burn's growing catalogue.

These guys don't really do much of anything innovative or groundbreaking, but they've been
chugging along for years delivering solid melo-death/metalcore and this is no exception. If you
like HSB, this is them playing as safe as can be, but there's still a lot of melodic riffing and
decent song-writing to enjoy.
Can't help but feel like this release is just leaving me wanting a bit more and wishing they would
experiment outside of their comfort zone a lot more.....the same feeling I've had after listening
to everything these guys put out.

Kind of a throwback to their older material in terms of execution, but also lacking in the rpunch that Veto and Iconoclast I had. Production isn't abysmal this time around, either. rAlso pretty repetitive, but it's at least solid. rBy the way, is that fucking Corpsegrinder on 'Prey to God?'
