On previous efforts, it was always a virtue that Primus veiled their dark, unhappy lyrics with a quirky and catchy sound. There were some slightly unnerving snippets of songs here and there, but nothing quite like what you hear on Pork Soda. Here, the compositions are much darker and more dissonant than ever before, and this is evident even early on with imposing classic "My Name Is Mud". You still have your base Primus sound; funky basslines and strange vocal inflections from Les Claypool, polyrhythmic and fluid drumming from Herb Alexander, and angular riffs from Larry LaLonde, but it's all darkened up compositionally. The lyrics became even darker as well, dealing with death as the main theme while delving into murder and suicide. It's strange, then, that this was their commercial peak in terms of album sales. But, I suppose that's Primus for you: irony always finds its way around them, intentionally or not.

This is perhaps Primus' most inaccessible album... and the one album that I wouldn't mind listening to even when falling asleep. Les Claypool's vocals and bass playing not only shine throughout Pork Soda, but they're able to paint quite an ominous, yet profound canvas. Despite what some may say about the record, I think it's aged fairly well.

This is nowhere even close to as good as the first two albums from Primus. I think the issue that makes it this way is that it is now entirely focused on the bass, meaning the guitar is no longer able to shine and drive the tracks. With that said, there are some good songs on here. However, there are also a lot of songs that are just kind of slow and that lack excitement.
