4.5 superb | Alabaster Jones | July 9th 16 | WHen it comes to tHe Black Hippy collective, it's easy to tHink tHat Kendrick Lamar is Head and sHoulders above tHe rest of tHe group. THere's always been potential in tHe otHer members, but none of tHem Have realized it yet. Until, of course, ScHoolboy Q released tHis record. He's always been a pretty versatile rapper, Having tHe ability to sHift into wHatever style of Hip-Hop He pleases seamlessly. THe only issue was tHat he didn't do any of tHose styles particularly excellently. Again, until He released tHis record. Blank Face is one of tHe most well-rounded Hip-Hop albums of tHe year so far, witH a dominant west coast feel tHat gravitates between gangsta rap, trap, and even some pop rap witH R&B Hooks. WitH the cHarisma that Q operates witH on tHe mic, He's able to paint some pretty good pictures despite His lyrics often being blunt. THe features Here really tear it up as well, as Heard on "Ride Out" witH Vince Staples and "Dope Dealer" witH E-40. And last but not least is tHe pHenomenal production, wHich very fluidly adapts to wHatever style Q's going witH and providing top notch beatwork regardless of style. Truly, tHen, Blank Face is ScHoolboy Q's first record tHat one Has no qualms calling "excellent".

3.5 great | TheManMachine | August 10th 16 | As a whole it's pointlessly prolonged as are at least a handful of singular tracks, there's a ginormous glut of guest-spots including an inevitable prank-waste Kanye feature, there's the despicable deviation that is "Overtime". But when it hits it hits hard: two-part "Groovy Tony/Eddie Kane" more than warrants its 6+ minutes, "Dope Dealer" dispenses a classically criminal chorus alongside a bifocal-bumpin' E-40 verse, Tyler the Creator's production unexpectedly contributes a big ol' jolt-o-vigor a la "Big Body", "Str8 Ballin'" is all sortsa stunning and sports a breathtakingly boastful bush-2-kush hook from Jesse Rankins. And despite the hodgepodge of visitor-n-virtue variance, Q's persona still firmly prevails -- a snarl that's mostly sinister and slightly wise and isn't shy towards slow jamz; a guy who callously dons a Blank Face when he's letting shots ring and giving your mama condolences yet candidly calls his Crip-dad a bitch for leaving him "where hope just don't exist". And he would prefer to fuck right now, as opposed to sometime later.

4.5 superb | Gene Gol-Jonsson CONTRIBUTOR | March 6th 24 | Schoolboy Q pours all his ambition and twisted craetivity into a fantasy gangster concept album that was received with praise, only for that praise to quickly dissipate and be replaced by confusion. Now, comfortably misunderstood, it remains a bizarre mystery, but an equal part too-clever-for-its-own-good and engrossing. Certainly a challenging listen, but a worthwhile one with some fantastic production and lyrics.

3.4 great | Erwann S. STAFF | October 10th 23 | ScHoolboy Q's best and most consistent album nevertheless displays the rapper's faults: it's too long and inconsistent. There are some of his best tunes here though ("John Muir").

3.5 great | dihstyle69 | October 27th 16 | schoolboy q has been trying to create a great album for a while now, but he certainly failed to do so every single time he tried. habits and contradictions never really went in after the haunting and dark sacrilegious, while oxymoron lost points with too many boring, uninspired club bangers that didn't have to be there at all. to be honest, this album right here faces many of the same problems the others had, even if this one is a tad better. his label made him put that overtime track as well as the track with candice, which are absolutely horrible tracks that don't even fit in the overal feel of the album. this project is a bit too long too, could've easily been cut out to like 60 minutes. 3.5+

3.5 great | cjbizzlebizzle | October 24th 16 | Blank Face is a tale of two stories. One subset of tracks are some of the best of recent memory covering diverse sonic landscapes with elements of hardcore hip hop, West Coast beats, trap, soul and jazz. This bunch includes THat Part, Groovy Tony/Eddie Kane (the best track on the record), Dope Dealer, JoHn Muir and Big Body. Q manages to paint a glamorous yet serious picture of street life with a moderately paced, confident flow. The beats are also very strong at times with a truly soulful backbone borrowing elements from seemingly all hip hop worlds, funk and some jazz. The soundscape is diverse and deep. It is obvious that this is a modern rap album but it borrows some charm from the past few decades of hip hop. These highlights are enough to make this a great album but the worst tracks on the album do a few negative things. They extend the album needlessly by about twenty extra minutes and make you wonder about Schoolboy Q's ability to put together the full length package. Overtime and By Any Means are just bad songs, plain and simple. Blank Face LP is a great album but with a bit more effort and a bit less content it could have been a borderline classic.
