Oceanic arguably represents the emotional peak of ISIS' career. With this album, the band actually created a
sonic representation of an ocean. Pounding rhythms, heavy guitar riffs, harsh and yet subdued vocals, subtly
approached yet overwhelming climaxes; these are the elements that make this album the jaw-dropping
experience that it is. While it may take a while to initially set in, the breathtaking atmosphere created in this
album is undeniable; the vocals may take time to get used to but ultimately are very expressive. Of course,
the album isn't perfect, no matter how mind-blowing it may be in your first experience with it. When you look
past the inherent emotional intensity of the whole thing, little flaws may be more noticeable: the dry
production, the occasional sloppiness in the performance, the presence of "-" and "Maritime", both of which
serve no purpose in the context of the album, and the bizarre, unsatisfying conclusion of Weight, which holds
fantastic promise for about 9 minutes before inexplicably collapsing in on itself in its final section. It's not a
perfect album, but rather one that sacrifices technical perfection in exchange for incredible emotional depth;
in the end, it's easy to forgive the album's small imperfections when this depth is just so huge. If you like
post-metal or atmospheric metal, you should have this.

Excellent album! It sonically descibres landscapes and surrounds you with a wall of sound. Everything is both original and incredoble. Take, for example, the way the riffs are both heavy and crushing but as ambient as your average post-rock band in the same breath. It must have taken them along time to create a sound which is the child of mogwai and the melvins. Its amazing. I really want to hear panopticon!

Influenced by Neurosis, ISIS goes on to craft their own sound, becoming one of the most vital pioneers for post-metal. Oceanic represents the band maturing, employing dense sounds and sonic landscapes. A classic in the genre and one of the best 2002 releases.

Isis, you perfectly capture the most identifiable elements of the ocean with one. Honestly. You do a phenomenal job of representing every single attribute of the sweeping sea, including those moments where absolutely nothing happens within it, and yeah, even the moments when other landscapes would be much more ideal. But if it's a matter of you guys capturing an image flawlessly, then you win! Fortunately for you guys, the sea is a pretty great place. I suppose I'm just prone to become seasick.

This is imo much better than Panoptican. Not saying that Panoptican isn't a classic in its own right, its just that Oceanic is better. Oceanic mixes the perfect balance between ambient and heavy. Every song on here is excellent with Carry, From Sinking, and Hym being the standout tracks. The vocals leave a little bit to be desired but the musicianship more than makes up for it. This is definitely Isis at their best.

take the ambience of explosions in the sky or gsybe and mix it with the heaviness of a band like Tool and you get an amazing offspring called Isis. Sit back and enjoy the ride.

Contrary to popular opinion on Sputnik, I found this release a little too sprawling for my tastes, even for Isis. If I were planning on going this atmospheric route I'd take a band like Rosetta anyday. I've still yet to hear their latest in its entirety but from what I've heard so far it seems to be one of the band's better outings. This is definitely entertaining, though I'm not sure how much staying power this'll have after a few listens to be honest.

Isis is often claimed to want to sound like Tool. This couldn't be farther from the truth-Tool is drab and all alike, Isis is fresh, brutal, and ridiculously dense as well as tense. At every moment, their music feels at it's bursting point, about to blow your speakers, and this tension as well as attention to every detail in the music whether it be 20 mixes down in the mix, makes Isis's Oceanic a true perfect album.

Being my favorite band, Isis can never do wrong. To be honest, this album just didn't.....click. I mean, it's amazing, "The Beginning and The End," and "False Light" are moving, numbing, and captivating. I just can't seem to see how people can regard this album with the likes of Panopticon or In the Absence of Truth. Well, time will tell....

This is the album that showed Isis' maturity, and their breakthrough. From the course of their first EP to Celestial, it was evident that Isis were going into more of an atmospheric direction, rather than brutality which was shown on earlier efforts. Oceanic is one of the best records of 2002, for any genre.
