worth noting is that the brutal death side's lyrics all pertain to disposing of the dead (embalming, being buried, decaying, etc) while the 90's prog death side's lyrics are all about what happens to the spirit when you die according to the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Very cool concept album.

First half is mind-numbingly brutal, experimental and enjoyable. But while I?m a fan of jazz fusion, I don?t find the second half to be as interesting

AMAZING! I came for Brutal DM when I get comoletely unexpectedly hit by my favourite thing in the world, full-on Jazz Death Metal! Wow. To first address the first half, one gets exactly what one would expect. Crushingly heavy Brutal DM with hints of Jazz. However! Half-way into the album, the Dharma part starts, the drummer changes his snare and gets a pletgora of new cymbals, and off we go into wanky Cynic-like fusion worship! It sounds effortless, briliant and all flows so well.rStill, a split-rating is needed:rDisposal of the Dead: 3.5rDharmata: 4.5

Dharmata side is fun as hell. Awesome that there's bands out there keeping this style alive. Disposal of the Dead is quite fun to listen to as well. The shorter length to each side works wonders.

One thing that is clear is that the cynic/atheist inspired jazz-metal wankery on the 2nd half of this album is a blast to listen to. However it almost feels like they were trying a bit to hard to be "jazzy" and it comes off as a bit of a mess in places. If they would have toned down the wankery a bit I think it could have resulted in more solid material. It's still a great listen in the end.

If it weren't for the similar production, it would be hard to tell that these two records were made by the same band in Defeated Sanity. The first side, called Disposal Of The Dead, is in a brutal death metal style, making use of swampy vocals, crushing riffs, and blisteringly fast drumming. The atmosphere is constantly oppressive, and it's some of the most well made brutal death that has come out this year. The second side, called Dharmata, is some of the best Floridian death metal worship in circulation currently, and though the influences are worn clearly and proudly on their sleeves, it's still some pretty decent material. That said, the first side beats out the second by a pretty wide margin, and while the second side is some sweet stuff, it's simply too unoriginal to be as effective as the first. All this said, Defeated Sanity show both sides of their spectrum on this dual-record, and manage to put some fresh brutal death to the table in the process.
