The Black Album isn't Jay-Z's last album, but if he'd stayed in retirement, it would have been, and Hova would have thus bookended his career with his strongest release since the essential Reasonable Doubt. Lyrically, it's only bettered by his aforementioned debut, and the production is impeccable, unmatched by everything else he's ever done. The album only falls below its remarkably high self-established standard twice, and even then "Threat" and "My 1st Song" would likely be highlights on any album from a lesser MC. Sure, the albums before and after this were duds, but if Jay had retired for good, The Black Album would have assured the hip-hop community would be missing him. The rest of us are just hoping he can make something this good again.

I'm a sucker for records where you can really feel the passion, and The Black Album is no exception. Every lyric laid down on this album has purpose behind it, every track its' meaning. In many ways this feels like the realest we've heard from Jay-Z, and I absolutely can't get enough of it. Damn near a perfect hip hop project in my eyes.

Two thirds of 'The Black Album' is humourless, indulgent self promotion. The late revival of 'Moment of Clarity', '99 Problems' and 'Lucifer' pull together elements that previous tracks didn't even attempt.

his first good album since reasonable doubt. his flow is still absolute trash, even on dirt off your shoulders
where he repeatedly claims to be "the best rapper alive" he cant even say it with flow, he says it so offbeat
and unevenly its embarrassing that he's actually claiming to be the best rapper alive. this guy is fucking
overrated garbage. hes no legend and you jay z fans buy into it when he says hes the best rapper alive.
people make fun of wayne for it, but jay is way more cockier than wayne. hes such a loser. made 11
albums and only 2 are listenable. worst rapper ever, but otherwise this album isn't that bad and i was
surprised considering how terrible jay is. you can try and argue all you want but jay is just another
mainstream piece of shit like drake, gucci mane, soulja boy and jeezy... hes absolutely NOT a legend. wish
he stayed retired, hip hop would be much better off without this idiot ruining it with his mainstream
garbage.

Thank god Jay-Z didn't leave after that song becuase he woulda never made the rest of this amazing album. Since this album is by Jay-Z you can only expect it to have great rhymes. He succeeds.
