Here is where Covenant accepted a nice chunk of influence from synthpop. They were always a dark band to begin with, so it follows that Europa would be compared to a "Sisters Of Mercy with a techno beat" as many have said. They don't quite have the songwriting chops of that band, but that's not to say that the songwriting here is lacking; most of the these songs a pretty well written and have at least a good synth line or two in addition to Eskil Simonsson's dark and powerful vocals. The issue here is the lack of variety; most of the songs follow the same formula, and while they're good, the potential to be better is found when they deviate from the formula like on explosive closer "Wall Of Sound". It's a good thing that they'd shake up this formula on later releases, but Europa nonetheless has some decent futurepop jams.
