Seether's first full-length studio album with completely all original material since their release of Fragile as Saron Gas. Luckily, it did not let down, quite frankly it exceeded all expectations. The lyrics were so raw and moving that I never realized there was no swearing until I read an interview with them. It continued with the theme of Disclaimer (in terms of being applicable to my life). Had this cd been released instead of Disclaimer it would have still had the same impact on my life.
While Disclaimer was more natural in the band's raw mongrel rock, its follow-up Karma and Effect takes the unexpected route in being MUCH heavier than its predecessor. Impressively forsaking an attempt to go more mainstream, Seether's second effort is heavily influenced by metal and benefits greatly from it. For a "mainstream" rock band, these guys sure can write some motherfucking riffs. Great shit.
Heaviest Alternative album I know so far. Some pieces I would consider as Metal, for example Because of Me and Simplest Mistake. The ballads sound kind of fucked up in a very positive way. And Remedy rocks like hell!
Have you ever enjoyed an album in ridiculous amounts and have never been able to properly explain just why? In a way, that's me and this record right here.
So what the hell is it that has made Karma and Effect so damn listenable to me over the years? Could it be the damn-near-irresistible accessibility of the mix of downtuned Cobain-isms and guitar pop hooks? Perhaps Shaun Morgan's ear for a tight song structure and big choruses? Maybe even the fact that you're drawn back to each and every song for a variety of different reasons? Whatever it is, Karma and Effect is a triumphant album- it soars where most of its contemporaries plod, and (in a shocking turn for a post-grunge record) manages to get everything right for once.
Let's rock.
This album in my opinion is one of Seether's best. Its also tops both earlier Disclaimer albums. My favorite songs from the album were Remedy, Truth, and World Falls Away.
