I've always been fascinated by bands that cannot be pigeonholed into any one subgenre or even a genre as a whole. For instance, it's selling a whole lot short to call something like Mr. Bungle just "rock", even though that's technically the main genre they're based in. It's the same with Suuns. You can just call them "indie", but that leaves so much out of the picture. There's influences from many subgenres, including post-punk, noise rock, indie pop, and even neo-psychedelia. This makes for a largely hypnotic and sometimes wondrously repetitive experience, and though it may drag for a bit in the middle, Hold/Still is a dark turn for Suuns. It really sounds like it's cover: alone in the near-darkness with a faint light glowing upon you like a spotlight, illuminating you as you think and listen. Sometimes it's paranoid and cloudy ("Brainwash", "Paralyzer"), and sometimes it's full of clarity ("Nobody Can Save Me Now"), but it's still an easy attempt at clearing your head.
