The idea behind a psychedelic, trippy black metal band is an interesting one, but at what point does the music become an exercise of almost oppressive ambition? That's the line Oranssi Pazuzu toes during the entirety of Varahteliga. Make no mistake, there are really awesome sections of music on this album, like the world drums that dominate "Lahja" and the guitar that sounds like an air raid siren during the climax of "Havuluu". Yet, for every moment of this album that works, there's another that doesn't. Much of the compositions are meandering and pretty uninteresting, and it ultimately becomes tiresome to listen through. Sometimes, the payoff is worth it, like those aforementioned moments, but other times it's impossible to justify. Thus, Varahteliga, while deliciously ambitious in some instances, is an exercise in unjustified patience in others. It would be nice to see these kinks worked out on future efforts, because without them, the band would definitely be on to something.

Another spacey'n'psychy record from these dudes, another record that sounds like a prep for live shows. Their repetitive tunes are more jams than actual songs, and while it must sound good live, it doesn't feel as captivating on record. It's still masterfully performed, but it feels like the band struggles songwriting-wise.

On my first listen, I just stopped at "Saturaatio". It was so good, I had to listen it 5 times on repeat, and then go on with the rest. What a beautiful mindfuck. Insane album.

These Finnish bastards have written the perfect album...WTF...If you are into psychedelic you will
simply be amazed. Every song is ideally constructed and the album is 100% solid. Hail Spirit Noir
and Oranssi Pazuzu are the masters of extreme psychedelia. Aluk Todolo are also pointing at the
right direction but composition wise, their music lacks a bit of essence. Regarding Oranssi,
nothing less than 5/5 would fit

Another post black metal band that makes music that is far too monotonous and two-dimensional. These guys are at least on the high side of the genre, but the good parts are drowned by the monotony of it all.

Another excellent work from this finnish band. Style is somewhat always the same, and perhaps this may be their drawback in the long run, but the result on this one is brilliant, at least on par (if not slightly better) with their previous albums.
