I don't think I've had a stronger emotional bond to an album. It casually hits pretty deep, and I go back for another listen just about every day.

Old Friends is the kind of song that feels a part of the great american songbook. You feel like you've heard the song
somewhere before, but never as realized or as affecting. The rest of Cardinal isn't too far behind.

I don't really expect most people to enjoy this as much as I do, it just happened to
arrive in my
life at the perfect time.
Also fuck everyone, this is the best album of 2016. I'm calling it already.

With their half-hour of emo-ish yearnin' and woes wrapped up in ragged-n-laggard countrified aesthetics, they pull off a nonchalant just-rolled-outta-bed feel that is amiable and intimate -- Evan Hall's erratic and downtrodden whimper-wails serve as a catalyst for instability, and much like his fellow bandmates, doesn't think twice about shrouding brilliance with laxity. Hopefully he takes comfort in the fact that somewhere between the loss of old friends through fuck-ups and resolving to make some new ones, he's got quite the supportive troupe in the meantime.

Adolescent Personal lyrics and a musical hotchpotch of midwest emo, alt-country, and indie rock? Ok, cool, why not. What makes this a great record is its songwriting: hooks are memorable, dynamic switches are powerful, and their fragile lyrics are well-compensated by rawness. The slow songs ain't my thing, but the dynamic ones are truly great.
