Given that this album was a major label debut for the guys of Rise Against. That doesn't mean that they fell into the major label trap. Belting out songs of politics and freedom have never sounded so sweet. It has your heavy opener (State Of The Union), your anthemic protest song (Give It All), and your touching ballad (Swing Life Away). Sure it may not be another Revolutions Per Minute, but it took the Rise Against formula and made it their own.

Mainstream punk at it's finest, Rise Against's 3rd album Siren Song Of The Counterculture could easily be considered a modern punk classic. Edgy, hard, unrelentingly, unabashedly loud music. The vocals are harsh and delivered with ridiculously intense, as if every word sung by Tim is cutting his vocal chords and he's proud of it. Songs such as "Give It All" and "State of the Union" are fantastic anthemic protests, and the unexpectedly touching Swing Life Away is awesome. No song is truly weak, and the unrelenting speed of the album makes for some of the best mosh music this side of Metal.

Rise Against songs are simple in a way. It's not uber-technical like for example Fall of Troy. Still there's a lot of energy behind this. Straight forward. The vocals are quite versataile, ranging from rough screams, to melodic parts to mellow whispers. You can feel the emotions transported through this, which underlines the lyrical content perfectly. Which is another big plus: not afraid to adress issues, and not getting uber-cheesy or corny at that.

The change that Rise Against made with large risk has worked wonders for this band. Their first major label release is almost a perfect album. Mixing hardcore roots with some of the best hooks around, this album will be spinning for years to come.

Theres everything on the major label debut, a furious punk opener, catchy pop-punk songs and even a acoustic track, all of which done sensationally well. Only a couple of weaker tracks and the lack of aggression compared to there previous records hold this back from being a classic

Their definite best album, its quite awesome from start to finish. Opening with the nicely heavy State of the union and continues onward. A life less frightening is a fairly good song. Then they have one of their best songs, Paper wings which has one of the best chorus'. The lyrics are subtly politally charged and rise against very well shows your there opinions on war and the government. Give it all is a good "pump up song". Dancing for rain opens in a nice acoustic line and then charges forth quickly with an cool riff and very wel matching bass and drums. Its probably one of the best songs on the album. Rise against has a way of making very cool chorus' coupled with well written bridges verses. And after the CD has given you a good healthy dosage of hardcore punk. We get the excellent "Swing Life Away" probably the perfect song to describe summer. Lyrically its beautiful and the song makes you thinks of everything that makes the chill back and awesome days of summer so amazing, thats how I feel about it anyway. The album ends off with "Rumours of my demise have been greatly exagerrated" (fitting title for a last song). Which again is very chorus driven but again a great song. I highly recommend the album in my opinion their finest work.

Siren Song is the greatest compilation of punk rock headbangers and anthems that I have heard thus far. Joe Principe keeps Rise Against consistantly fresh with crisp bass lines and fills while the rest of the instruments do their part well also. Nearly every track on here is a sing-along and there are plenty of mood and tempo changes that keep listeners riveted all throughout the album.

Many different guitar sounds slam throughout the album while a surprisingly intricate bassline rings resounds. Unique drumbeats break the norm of drumming in the rock music of today. The lead vocals are still as able as ever - whether it's screaming or whispering - it's no problem. Of course, the background vocals are always there to repeat important lyrics and to keep everything together.
This album features harder sounds in songs such as "State Of The Union." They are still fierce with amazingly structured and deep lyrics.
One song, called "Swing Life Away" is an accoustic piece about living a simple life, and not needing all the fancy things, but just needing those breath-taking moments and some loyal and true friends. If you don't buy the album, I would at least search the music video for this.
Your life will never be complete until you hear these songs ... believe me ...

Supurb album. This is the album that got me in to punk rock. To this day, even after hearing classic and modern punk legends alike, I still don't think anybody can touch Rise Against with a ten foot pole. Good review.

You guys said it. They are very energetic and adrenaline pumping melodic metal/rock band from Chicago, Illinois, USA. I really like its simplicity, yet catchy tune and vocals. Tim McIlrath has a really catchy unique voice, which is sometimes melodic and can also scream. And yes the lyrics themselves are something to think about as they are a band who sings largely about politics, standing up for yourself and other issues, eg, "State of the union I trust".
