This album is a high watermark for Genesis, which perhaps explains the fact that it was succeded by one of the most ambitious prog albums ever made.

One of the most perfect albums ever recorded, regardless of the travesty the band would go on to become in their later years. Everything about this album is catered to the listeners ear perfectly so everyone can enjoy something about this progressive rock classic.

What is probably considered the band's Magnum Opus, Selling England by the Pound is one of the greatest progressive rock achievements of all time. Steve Hackett's guitarriffs and sound could in a single record take credit for the inspiration of the way bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest sound like. Furthermore, is Peter Gabriels voice and lyrics at it's finest, and the simple beauty of the albums title is something respectable in itself. There's not really a dull moment to be found, but to point out the highlights, one has to say the title track, Firth of Fifth and The Cinema Show.

Selling England by the pound was the crowning achievement of Genesis' reign of the 70s prog rock scene. Every individual member shines on this album, with Gabriel's fittingly flexible voice flitting between haunting tones and satirical accents, Collins' incredible rhythmical prowess shining and receding fitting perfectly with the flow of the music, Hackett chiming in with some beautiful melodies and moving solos, Banks providing the ideal keyboard accompaniments to produce a perfect melody at the right times, and finally Rutherford, the ideal backbone for the entire album, working with Collins to hold together this entire album of pure musical Genius.

Genesis is one of the leading bands of 70's prog, and this record is a reason why. Selling England by the Pound is considered to be on the best Progressive records ever spawned, and it is, just as divinely perfect as everyone claims. The best part is the fact that the record is highly consistent; there are so many good ideas meshed into each track. The synths are handled tastefully, and the piano riffs are brilliant. The only negative aspect about the album was the some of track "The Battle of Epping Forest". I found this track to be a jumbled mess, the lyrics flowed terribly and the song was disjointed, in a bad way. On a good note, it had some truly epic and controlled parts as well, so it wasn't all bad. A large positive to the album was the the second of two epics. The second epic, "The Cinema Show" was a flawless, mellow masterpiece that is among the best epics I've ever heard. This album is fantastic, and remains one of my top Progressive albums ever. Genesis is truly awesome.

Simply awesome? No. Is awesome, but give it more than one or two spins in your player. This record should grow in you, and it can become one of thouse you'll never get tired of. If you look this way, don't you think it really deserves this time of dedication?
The best way to hear a prog-record is to know and wait for all the variations that each song will bring to you. Do it that way, and spend some time with this one.
And of course, remember. Catalonia is NOT Spain.
