I found Eternal to be a solid, 'return to the roots' album for Stratovarius: fast-paced tempos, engaging sing-alongs, and catchy choruses. Recommendations: "Man In The Mirror", "Few Are Those", "My Eternal Dream", "Rise Above It".

A distinct improvement over "Nemesis" (2013), itself a distinct improvement over everything not named "Episode" or "Visions." The only truly execrable track is, of course, the obligatory piano-drenched ballad "Fire in Your Eyes." (Delete that track post-haste and you're good to go.) The nearly twelve-minute viking epic "The Lost Saga" is suitably epic and the remaining tracks are suitably cheesy Finnish power metal. Which is to say, a class act the whole way. Memorable fun, thy name is Stratovarius.

Stratovarius play to their strengths on Eternal, which is being perhaps the cheesiest and catchiest metal band alive today. On one hand, you don't have a band pushing any envelopes, but on the other you don't really need them to, because the fact they're presenting a dose of fun, accessible material is all that matters.
