The first album featuring the well-loved Deep Purple Mark II lineup, Ian Gillian shows us what an awesome vocalist he is with his nearly 6-octave range. Comes very close to Machine Head.

This is personally my favorite Deep Purple album. It is the first with the Mark II line-up, featuring Ian Gillian on vocals and Roger Glover on bass. From the fast-paced explosion of "Speed King", to Gillian's screams on "Bloodsucker", to Blackmore's intense shredding on the 10 minute epic "Child In Time", Deep Purple established themselves as one metal's godfathers in 1970 with this release.

A true classic, the pinnacle of organ and guitar driven proto-metal and Deep Purple's best studio effort. The interplay between Blackmore, Lord and Gillan (the first two especially trading off solo after solo) is exemplary, not to downplay Paice's drumming. The longer tracks including drawn out jams display Purple's skill the best, which is where I feel the only issue in the album is. The more straight-forward songs are just that. Too straight-forward.

IN ROCK was a landmark album for Deep Purple and heavy metal music. It's an absolutely
ferocious and unrelenting album that pushed the record levels well into red, as evidenced by
the slightly distorted master mixes.
Everyone in the band is completely GOING FOR IT, making for some amazing solo duels between
Jon Lord & Ritchie Blackmore. Jon Lord is absolutely shredding his Hammond B-3 and pushing
his Marshall & Leslie cabinets to their limits. Ritchie Blackmore can be at the very end of
the album heard scraping his guitar across the control room window in “Hard Lovin’ Man”.
Blackmore seems particularly inspired on this record and has taken his showmanship to another
level, thanks in part to the influence of Jimi Hendrix. His manic solo breaks are a highlight
throughout the album.
Although the Mark II lineup's first album together was CONCERTO FOR GROUP AND ORCHESTRA, IN
ROCK was the first proper studio release for the classic lineup of Blackmore, Lord, Paice,
Gillan & Glover.Black Sabbath may have been heavy & menacing, but Deep Purple's impassioned
performances and virtuoso musicianship are utterly savage. One of my favorite records of all
time and a 10+ in my book.
Highlights: "Speed King", "Bloodsucker", "Child In Time", "Flight Of The Rat" & "Hard Lovin'
Man".

The First of the streak of their three best albums, and of course the legendary Mark II line-up. That said, this is just great as the next two, although containing the best Deep Purple song ever, and one of the greatest songs ever in general, Child in Time.

In Rock was highly groundbreaking for its time. It was extremely influential for much hard rock and heavy metal that would follow. Bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest definitely borrowed from this. Also of note: you get a fantastic opening/closing combo with "Speed King" and "Hard Lovin' Man".

If it wasn't for Black Sabbath's S/T, In Rock would claim it's rightful place as the
truly first album that gave birth to heavy metal. Palm muted power chords, screaming bluesy solos,
pick slides, high pitched vocals, this album had all the ingredients. After recording 3 albums,
Deep Purple made a turnaround in their music which resulted in one of the best rock albums of all
time. Highly influential and essential to any musical collection, this monumental record is
believed by some to be the finest moment in Deep Purple's career, surpassing even Machine
Head. I really can't blame those who choose this album over Machine Head.
