4.5 superb | Deadwing2112 | May 19th 20 | After a nineteen year hiatus, the most overlooked band of the 90s unleashes The Heart is a Monster, the sequel to its criminally underrated classic, Fantastic Planet. Failure leaves behind the overt heroin addiction references, however surges forward with its dystopian journey into the psychological abyss with Hot Traveler, Atom City Queen, Counterfeit Sky and Mulholland Drive (a nod perhaps to David Lynch). This album hits even harder than Fantastic Planet with the bass mixed to an absolute maximum.

4.0 excellent | eliebenberg | March 30th 16 | "The Heart Is a Monster" represents one piece of music, rather than a collection of stand alone songs. It requires some commitment - but when listening to it straight through from start to finish (perhaps two or three times over), you start to appreciate it. In other words - it's a grower. Oh yes, and Failure's use of the bass guitar tickles my fancy.

3.0 good | cjbizzlebizzle | December 29th 15 | The Heart is a Monster by Failure with its incredibly spacious alt-rock sound is an album that leaves me incredibly conflicted. Production, instrumental layering/effects and mood swings are all fabulous bringing the listener into a sonic space filled with plenty of layers to chew through. It might sound elementary but the depth of sounds here is the best characteristic of this effort. Each instrument shines leaving interesting content to be found in repeat plays. The best parts of the album are truly rock solid and you can tell they pondered upon with careful attention. All of this being said the true failure of the album, a damn shame, is the feeling that 25%+ of it is filler between the Segues and a few less than memorable tracks. In my eyes it seems that the ability to trim content and lay an album out is a rare trait for any musician. A shave and a haircut and more tracks like AM Amnesia, Hot Traveler, Mulholland Dr. and I Can See Houses would bring this over the top. I feel lost in space, in the bad sense, from tracks 10-16. So close to being great.

2.0 poor | TheManMachine | November 12th 15 | Sensitive alt-grunge revival fans of the globe, forgive me (or don't). Though I will attest to the fact that this really just ain't my bag, this particular bag is quite superb sonic-wise despite being generally tedious song-wise -- so kudos and all, but lord, 18 tracks? Six of which are segues that offer not much more than time-killer filler? The Album is a Monster; not to mention overt highlight "Hot Traveler" is placed right at the forefront, and most of the residual notables are enclosed to the first half as well.
