A very easy and safe listen, especially by Townsend's own standards, but that's exactly what makes it so fun. Ziltoid's strong points lie in its more anthemic moments such as Planet Smasher and Color Your World, which, along with the various other hooks contained within the album, can carry you away in no time - you just need to let them.

I know my name is ironic but I forgot my password so here I am. Someone once told me and for many years I thought Gene Hoglan was still with Devin when this album was made. I can hear it now but I thought for the longest time Gene the Machine was playing this. And after all he's done (especially Almost Again which is the greatest drumming song I've ever heard with Devin with SYL) I didn't bat an eye. 12 years later and I just learn it's not Gene Hoglan. I still can't help but think these drums are genius but hearing it wasn't actually Gene Hoglan has changed my outlook on it. rHorrible concept but the music is too good here. Maybe I'm still holding on to Gene Hoglan as the drummer but I love this album. Especially Hyperdive and The Greys.

A very funny and hard hitting album. Awesome flow from song to song, a really rewarding play through. One of Devin's most varied albums, and certainly one of his best.

Both the detractors and the fans of this album have been far too melodramatic and unrestrained with their ratings. 1/5 ratings should be reserved for truly terrible music and 5/5 ratings for masterpieces.
From the point of view of just being an entertaining album Ziltoid more than succeeds - when I just want some fun metal regardless of cheesiness then I often do just whip on Ziltoid. However, if you come in expecting something as inventive as most of Devy's albums, you are to be disappointed - it is no Infinity or Ocean Machine and most of the features that distinguish the album musically are lifted from previous solo albums. I would sooner recommend it to a Zimmer's Hole fan than a Devin Townsend fan, come in expecting cheesy fun rather than innovation and you won't be let down.

A well orchestrated hilarious concept album. Probably my favourite thing about this might be the story, even if way too goofy. My biggest gripe however, is quite a bit worse. The drum-machine sounds awful, and is way too loud in the mix. It gets titing real wuick, and sounds unrealistic. Otherwise, not really my style of music wntirely, but cool.

A tour de force by the one man army that is Devin Townsend. This album is goofy, at times actually funny, also heavy and massive and colorful and entrancing and absurd and just about everything else. Oh, did I mention it's a musical? Because WTF.

There is nothing inherently poor about Ziltoid's concept; rather, the problem is that this is the least interesting music of Townsend's career. There are a couple of bright spots-- "The Greys," the anthemic "Hyperdrive"-- but overall this album is a laborious and mostly unfunny listen.

Despite possessing a bit too much accessibility for even the most fetid humans, Ziltoid the Omniscient is certainly a diverting album. Omnidimensional creator Devin Townsend seems formidable when it comes to throwing a little jocularity here and there into the galactic universe of metal. A vocal minority might be put off by the dialogue portions of this recording, though said aspect's campiness works wonders when in conjunction with Devin's knack for shamelessly-inspired songwriting.

What a moron the guy who wrote the original 1.0 review for this, and the mindless sheep that followed immediately afterward all jumping on the "yeah it sucks so bad!" bandwagon. So ridiculously good this release and different. I typically listen to black metal but I can't help but love this shit.

'Ziltoid the Omniscient' is truly a solo album, as almost everything is done by Devin himself. Wacky, zany, and enjoyable, Ziltoid is one of Devin Townsend's top releases, containing some of his best songs (particularly "By Your Command", "Hyperdrive", and "The Greys").

Ziltoid is a fun metal album, a rarity in the current scene which seems to be saturated with overly-serious album concepts.rIt flows wonderfully, every song memorable, until N9, where it grinds to a screeching halt, as if Devy lost interest in the album halfway through writing it.

Might not be one of Townsend's best but songs like "Solar Winds" and "The Greys" are great. If you like Progressive Rock about coffee drinking aliens you need to give this album a try.

Why do you guys complain about this so much? Yes, this is boring by HevyDevy's standards, and yes this is a half-baked concept album from hell, but it's 10X better than most of the "metal" gargled out on a regular basis by those XYZ-core f**ks. Give it a light-hearted listen before screaming "lame", I'm sure you'll find it at least tolerable. 3.7/5

Despite the less than positive review this one got (that seemed to have more then its fair share of shee...followers) I was able to come out with some entertainment value with this record. To say that hearing this even once is a waste of time is a foolish statement and probably not very well thought out. Any Townsend fan would at least give this a go, and no doubt find elements they loved from his other records scattered throughout the chaos here. I'm not sure I get the response to this record...it's definitely not the most fantastic thing he's recorded, but it also isn't all that far off from a lot of his other work. Seems like an odd choice to pick on, but I guess even Devy isn't safe from pompous reviewers.

This album, at first, I thought was kind of a disappointment and the voice-overs can be kind of corny sometimes, but this has grown on me a lot. The heavy parts aren't as heavy as SYL generally is, there're more odd and quirky vocal melodies here and there, and, best of all, Devy's vocals sound much fresher and less strained than on some of the past releases (some vocals off Synchestra and The New Black sound like they could've been much better had he not been touring non-stop).
Something I usually expect from Devy's releases, especially SYL, is a set of songs consisting of half the tracks or so being high-quality and the other half being lackluster. This cd is much more consistent. You most likely won't be skipping tracks too often. Though some parts of the tracks might not appeal much, there'll most likely be another part of the song that'll get your attention.

this man is amazing and a musical genius, he is truly a gem in the sea of average musicians. im glad to hear that we will be getting more of his solo stuff in the future, even though its at the expense of SYL. and it doesnt really matter if the lyrics are serious or not, this is still his best work.

Haven't heard it yet but it sounds so interesting. He is so incredibly talented and creative that you can't help but be curious. Very cool cover art. What a shame he's semi retiring, but we got so much great music from him at least.

I think the album musically is amazing and i like the idea of the joke theme going through the album telling a story really reminds me of something of Starfox adventures lol. But i do think if these songs had serious lyrics this could of been his best work.
