Arctic Monkeys has always had identity, but with Favourite Worst Nightmare they really create their own sound.
Alex Turner is as clever as ever, and as funny as ever. But this time around, he doesn't concern himself with the daily struggles of working class England, as much as he did on the previous album, and the demos. Here - he writes quite a lot about love. He really manages to incorporate what was suggested on Who The Fuck Are Arctic Monkeys? with the "traditional" working class lyrics, reminiscent of Jarvis Cocker's. Matt Helders is still funky and jazzy, but even more hard-hitting than we are accustomed to him being. Quite a few of the tracks of Favourite Worst Nightmare shows The Cat being able to handle the more heavy melodies marvellously. Jamie Cook still has the magic touch. But here, he also proves to be a very unique guitarist, with a very distinct sound. This album is packed with damn near incredibly original chord progression. Nick O'Malley eases the pain missing Andy Nicholson caused. Andy was definitely an outstanding bassist. But the thing about Andy was, in some songs - he played a vital part, but then again - in some songs - he didn't do anything extra-ordinary. He would e.g. just follow the guitar's pattern(s). Nick does on the other hand play very sharp bass patterns that always stands out from the guitar patterns. Thus creating a unique guitar/bass interaction. To sum it up - the Monkeys rule. They are perhaps one of, if not _the_ biggest band in the world right now; and they bloody well deserve it.

Whatever People Say I Am was the fastest selling debut in British history for a reason. It isn't musical genius, but it put a great punk-spin on Indie comparable to what Mumford and Sons has done in the folk genre. Favourite Worst Nightmare is more punk and less Indie. Anyone who enjoyed their first album should definitely check this out. Even though it may not be quite as good, I actually enjoy this album considerably more than the original (Oh, and Humbug is a piece of garbage)

Just as good as the first, despite what critics may think. This is their transition album, it has the greatest parts of the debut with new styles that the monkeys will fully evolve on their third release. It is the best of both worlds.

The Arctic Monkeys return with a darker, maturer sound, whilst still keeping all of the elements that made "Whatever People Say I Am..." such a success. Although not quite up to the standard of their debut, this is filled with catchy songs, and arguably the first 5 songs are collectively better than anything on the first album. If it weren't for a slump in quality halfway through the album, this would be a masterpiece, and while "Old Yellow Bricks" and "505" make for a brilliant ending, you can't help but feel short changed by tracks such as "This House Is A Circus" and "Only Ones Who Know". Even with a few poor tracks, this album is brilliant.

Okay, we all knew that the sophomore effort from Turner & Co. was gonna be a tough follow-up to Whatever. But give the Arctic Monkeys a break- it's still an amazing piece of work. Where as their debut took place in the club, it's like Nightmare took place in the dark alley behind it- it's darkier, moodier, and packed with more emotional depth. "Do Me A Favour" is a brilliantly loaded breakup track, "Balaclava" is fantastic, "Brianstorm" and "D Is For Dangerous" are both furiously good, and "Old Yellow Bricks" is ridiculous british funk-punk. While the first album was wonderfully youthful, this time around is certainly more ball-grabbing and determined. Whatever is undoubtedly the classic, but Favourite Worst Nightmare earns an extremely solid 4.5.

Their second CD is both better and worse than their debut, because while that disc was immeasurably more fun for the majority, this disc really sees the band stretching out and achieving some great things. The first half of the album is like a slightly darker take on the album #1, with songs like the hipster-dissing "Teddy Picker" to the "Mardy Bum"-esque "Fluorescent Adolescent." However, songs like the breakup anthem "Do Me A Favour" to the surprisingly powerful closer "505." And how can you not like the lyric, "To break apart the ties that bind, perhaps fuck off might be too kind." C'mon.

Monkeys mature and craft not just their best CD, but easily one of the best to arrive this year. 'Teddy Pickers' & 'Fluorescent Adolescent' happily bump their way to the top of the list here. Each is resoundingly catchy and the Monkey's tongue in cheek observational writing holds forth to give them some substance beyond the notes. Though 'Old Yellow Bricks' is the album's stinker, the rest holds up to bring together an extremely solid album. Plus '505' is a pretty badass final track.
