In a global sense, "Citadel" is an improvement over "Portal of I" in songwriting, technicality,
and accessibility, although it lacks a central epic like "Forget Not" or "And Plague Flowers the
Kaleidoscope." Still, I'll take consistent excellence over occasional brilliance.
Seriously, even the cover art is better.

**Insert extremely biased and gigantically fanboyish spoogefest here**rrSeriously though, there isn't anything remotely objective I can say about this band, or this ralbum. Like the grandest of Blackwater Park obsessed metalheads that worship Opeth and think reverything Mikael does is gold, I am completely and utterly enamored with Neo, to the point where rany imperfections that may exist, just like they might in ANY work of art, are lost to me. All I see is beauty, all I feel is passion, all I hear is everything I want to hear from the music that rI love. I could throw a thousand million adjectives at this and never do my feelings for it rjustice. So I will end this mostly pointless rant with thank you Neo. Thank you for everything.

If it successfully follows in its own footsteps, does that do anything to impact its remarkability? Yes, only in that it's not a surprise. It's a notch. I don't see how anything else can really be counted against this album - a stunning successor tarnished only by the fact that it follows a stunning initial release.

Another excellent outing by NeO. They go harder pn the experimental nature than on PoI, whoch makes for a slightly less focused album to my ears. Nevertheless a fantastic effort combining Black Metal, Death Metal, progressive writing, world music and violins.

Definitely my favorite of the 3 LPs. Stronger songwriting than Urn (#2), and much more cohesive than Portal. It kept up the fantastic display of musicianship and writing chops that the band has become rather well known for.

Citadel addresses the main problem with Portal of I: length. This is a more focused, tighter, and less intimating record than its predecessor, and I applaud NeO for their restraint. Furthermore, "Painters of the Tempest" is the best song they've ever done. I suppose my own waning interest in progressive metal is partly to blame for why I don't enjoy this more-- Citadel is a strong record, but I have simply heard so much progressive metal over the last few years that I have exhausted myself of much interest of the genre. Many of the metal parts on here just bore me.

Sometimes in the world that exists between reality and space, there are coffins which can hold mystical abilities that are better left dug up than buried for eternity. One of these caskets is without a doubt known by the name of Citadel, which often takes the form of this beautiful work of art. Ne Obliviscaris throughout utilize a style of extreme metal which contains elements ranging from progressive to black and death metal as well as even classical music; frankly, debating over this group's overall sound would take a little while. The songwriting for this record is quite profound, with the violin sections in particular adding depth and substance to the entire tone of the album. Throw in violinist Tim Charles' melodious cleans with Xenoyr's abrasive growling and you've got yourself a smorgasbord of undying greatness.

Devour Me, Colossus - Part I may very well be song of the year. Absolutely incredible stuff, from the great bass sound, the vocals and the last few minutes being totally awesome. The whole album flows so well as a whole and surpasses Portal of I.

My first initial listen to Citadel was met with disappointment. I thought it didn't deliver or pack the same punch that Ne Obliviscaris' first album Portal Of I did. However, I listened to it again, and you know what? Sure, it's not as perfect and mesmerizing as Portal Of I, but this is still a breathtaking album. It's got very consistent and perfectly executed song writing, powerful vocals, and musicianship that most band can't possess after ten albums. Ne Obliviscaris is truly one of the most original and breathtaking bands in our modern age, and I can't wait to see what they do next.
