I really couldn't have asked for worse timing the moment I got into alternative metal band Chevelle; a fan of the act passed away three days before I'm coming up with this soundoff, and this is all I have to mention for that poor fanatic's sake. Anyway, Vena Sera is an instantly likeable, amusing ostrich of an album. Instrumentally crisp and lacking in restraints, this record (and Chevelle in general?) is what happens when you strip Tool of their flamboyance and Maynard's wine addiction, while occasionally throwing in nods to Helmet; speaking of comparisons to the former band, lead vocalist Pete Loeffler has a familiar, but no less enticing range. Years have passed and "Well Enough Alone" is still more than just a catchy song, and album closer "In Debt to Earth" is like a compelling eater of lands.

Almost every song here just flat-out rocks. Vena Sera showcases a tight, energetic sound as Chevelle presents their heavier side. The album loses focus in a few spots, but this is about as high as a 4 can be. (Screw that, 4.5).

This album had been my favorite of the group until i had taken a break from it to get aquainted with their other efforts. After coming back to it, I realize there is a bit of over-production that somewhat shrouds the actual musicianship of the group in this particular album. Its still good, but I think they may have tried too hard to accomplish the sound that they were going for.

With the succes of Wonder What's Next and the somewhat success of This Type Of Thinking, Vena Sera is a great step up. Pete's vocals are better than ever, often going into his higher vocals, while screaming less. His screaming sounds more powerful though, as if he's in pain. The guitars are more kind of lead based, faster and upbeat, as well as the drums. Some nice double bass kick in effect too, which helps the album out. The bass itself is better than the last two albums. As Chevelle continues to travel down the path of Hard Rock and alternative Metal, they'll keep maturing and it looks like they should get better from here.

Basically: all that previous potential that you could see in Chevelle's albums finally comes full swing here in Vena Sera. You will never hear an alternative metal trio put in as much heavy crunch like these guys. Easily, their most aggressive and best album to date.

While Chevelle won't win any awards for innovation, their 2007 offering Vena Sera - the band's fourth, first with new bassist and brother-in-law Dean Bernardini in tow - is the band's best effort to date by a longshot. Tracks like "I Get It," "Saferwaters," and "Saturdays" represent the best of the bunch, while "Brainiac," "Paint the Seconds," and "Straight Jacket Fashion" are other great notables on the record. Frontman Pete Loeffler is a tour de force vocally; his upper and lower registers are interspersed masterfully throughout the album, and his unique lyricism and style - not rhyming, predominantly using metaphor and simile, etc. - is an album highlight. Drummer Sam Loeffler provides assured, steady drumming and, together with Bernardini, creates a strong rhythm section. While Vena Sera has a clunker of a middle section ("The Fad," "Humanoid") and a poor opener in "Antisaint," the rest of the album is fantastic, and will very likely go down as one of the best rock albums of 2007.
